Cosmetic products have invaded our lives. Ads for cosmetics are everywhere – on every street, in magazines, on television, all over the Internet. Even though we may not realize it, advertising has convinced us, little by little, that we need a different cosmetic product for anything. Daily, we use shampoo, hair conditioner and hair mask, shower gel and body lotions, heels, hand and nail cream, face cream – for both day and night, special eye cream, wrinkle reduction cream, cleanser, lotion tonic.
Obviously, the list is endless, but we only mentioned the ones that can be counted among the most common cosmetic products, which are used daily, or several times a week.
According to a study conducted by researchers at Biosen Company in the United Kingdom, women use an average of 13 cosmetic products daily. All these products contain over 515 chemicals. The products that have the highest number of chemicals in their composition are, of course, perfumes. They are made of a cocktail of more than 250 ingredients; according to the study, some even reach up to 400 ingredients.

For instance, lipsticks have around 33 ingredients, body lotion – 32, mascara – 29 and, in the range of “clean” products, hand cream has an average of 11 ingredients. The beauty industry has changed significantly in recent years. The new “wonder products” contain more and more chemicals for a better, most obvious result and that means that women are subjected to a steadily increasing risk.
Another study showed that one third of women under 25 frequently use products for 40 + age range, which means that they subject themselves to an unnecessary risk. The legislation in the cosmetic industry does not provide strict regulations on the content of chemicals in creams or body care masks. Therefore, some of these products are not only ineffective, but they also have adverse effects.
Do you know which are the hazardous chemicals in body care products? Did you ever think that the inefficiency of some products is due to the numerous chemical processes that they have been subjected to?
Some Of The Chemicals In Your Cosmetic Products
- Propylene glycol is a petrochemical product that can be found in face creams as an emulsifier component. It smoothes the skin in the short run, but it speeds up aging. Moreover, it can cause irritation and dermatitis to certain types of sensitive skin.
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) has a degreasing role and is used in the composition of shampoos, soaps for face and shaving creams. It is actually a detergent which, if it meets the eyes, causes redness and irritation. Moreover, it is rapidly absorbed into the skin and it can even deposit on certain internal organs; in time, it can cause severe irritation and inflammation.
- The artificial perfume in skin care products has numerous adverse effects, from headaches, dizziness and skin rashes to lung problems.
- Many face creams contain mineral oil, which acts on the closure of pores and damage the cell structure.
- Parabens (methyl, butyl, ethyl) are synthetic compounds designed to preserve the properties of cosmetic products for a long time. Therefore, they are contained in face creams and hair masks and they often produce allergic reactions to the skin.ListenRead phonetically
