The outbreak of the MRSA superbug has many people clamoring for a cure. It appears that we can combat MRSA with aromatherapy oils effectively. The illness is very troublesome, and it can be deadly. Finding a homeopathic remedy for the bug is a very appealing venture.

What is MRSA?
The Mayo Clinic defines MRSA as a staph infection that stems from Staphyococcus aureus bacteria. The superbug is unique among staph infections in that it is resistant to antibiotics that are usually effective in treating the infections.
Methicillin-resistant Staphyloccus aureas (MRSA) is very problematic because it can be deadly and it is very difficult to treat. The Mayo Clinic notes that this type of staph infection can occur in the following places:
• Hospitals
• Nursing homes
• Health care facilities
• Dialysis centers
Any development of the infection that occurs in healthcare settings are referred to as heath care associated (HR-MRSA). Those who have weak immune systems and the elderly are particularly at risk for the health care related form. Community associated (CA-MRSA) is a newer form of the infection that is linked to pneumonia and infections in the soft tissues and skin.
How Can Aromatherapy Oils Treat MRSA?
Aromatherapy oils may be able combat MRSA, according to researchers from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. The essential oils may be effective in killing the deadly bacteria. In addition, the essential oils were found to kill E. coli bacteria.
Researchers tested 40 different types of essential oils, and two of them killed the MRSA bacteria, while one of them proved to kill the bacteria over time. There is a glaring problem with the research in that the researchers are unable to disclose which essential oils were found to be effective due to legal restrictions.
The oils may be effective in cases of MRSA in which the bacteria travel through the nostrils. Inhalation therapy for the staph infection is currently unpleasant. Essential oils may prove to be an effective alternative that is much more pleasant for the patient.
Conjecture
Some sources like Aromatherapy and Essential Oils suggest that the essential oils that are effective in treating MRSA involve a “Thieves” mixture of:
• Clove
• Lemon
• Cinnamon bark
• Eucalyptus
• Rosemary
• Radiata
There appears to be no scientific evidence that this particular blend is effective in treating the staff infection, but eucalyptus and tea-tree oil appear to help in some cases.
Medical Imperative
Using essential oils to combat bacteria can be effective for some minor conditions, but MRSA is not an illness that is subject to purely holistic approaches. Proper care is essential to a patient’s well being.
Anyone who suspects having MRSA should seek medical attention immediately. The condition is potentially deadly and it can be spread to others with relative ease. A formula of essential oils to treat MRSA has not been developed, and it is critical to receive the best medical care possible when faced with this potentially fatal illness.
