Chemotherapy Wigs for Cancer Patients
One of the most traumatic experiences of cancer treatment is losing one’s hair. This is especially hard for women who generally view their hair as their crowning glory. Most drugs used for chemotherapy result in hair loss. Thankfully, women now have a wide range of choices when it comes to dealing with chemotherapy caused hair loss.
Not only is there attractive and stylish headwear such as scarves and hats, but there are also wigs to suit just about any taste. With a good wig on, many cancer patients find it easier to step out and face the world while undergoing treatment.

How to Choose a Wig
The biggest decision a cancer patient has to make when it comes to wigs is should I go with natural (human hair) or synthetic wigs. Some of the main differences between wigs made from synthetic material and human hair include:
- Price: Wigs made from human hair are generally more expensive than those made from synthetic material such as polyester.
- Durability: Synthetic wigs do not as a rule stand up as well to regular wear and tear as do human hair wigs.
- Human hair wigs are easier to style but also require more care. Sometimes they will need to be taken to a professional to help them maintain the style and look.
In addition, not everyone loses all their hair during chemo. Some persons end up with bald spots or thinning hair. In such cases, all that may be necessary is a hair extension, also known as a hairpiece.
How to Care for your Chemotherapy Wig
If you wear a wig, you need to learn how to care for it to get the best from it. Caring for your wigs is important regardless of how much you pay for them. Maintaining your wigs involves the following:
- Both synthetic and human hair wigs need to be washed at least every two weeks, if worn often maybe once per week is even better.
- Special shampoos and conditioners made specially for wigs should be used
- Brush wigs with special brushes made for that purpose.
Synthetic Wigs: Not all the materials used for these types of wigs can withstand heat. As such not all synthetic wigs can be curled with a hot iron.
Human Hair Wigs: Wigs made from human hair can be treated just like your real hair. These wigs can be colored, permed, blow-dried, trimmed and styled.
With the variety of chemotherapy wigs now available, any female cancer patient who wants to look her best can do so with confidence.
