If you must have chemotherapy treatments, you know that you go to the hospital or cancer treatment center for those treatments, which are delivered intravenously. There may come a point in time, however, when that medicine can be delivered via a skin cream – but that day has not yet arrived. Despite this, there have been some interesting findings regarding the use of chemotherapy medicines and skin problems.

Chemotherapy Skin Cream for Sun Damaged Skin
A study that was published in the Archives of Dermatology lasted for 24 weeks. During the study, a skin cream that contained a chemotherapy drug was applied to various skin conditions, including wrinkles, yellow spots, dark spots, and more. What was found is that the drug was beneficial for all conditions, and most especially for the repair of sun damaged skin, which might at one point turn cancerous.
The Chemotherapy Medicine Used in Chemotherapy Skin Cream
The drug that was tested in the skin cream is called Fluorouracil. When the cream was applied to the skin, the area where the application was made would become irritated, with red, peeling skin. However, despite the initial appearance of damage, the drug was essentially eating away the damaged skin, allowing new healthy skin to grow in those areas.
The study was conducted on 21 people, and although more research is necessary, doctors have been using this same drug for some time for the treatment of skin lesions. The research was conducted for the sole purpose of seeing how the cream would work on precancerous skin conditions, but much was learned.
The Future of Chemotherapy Skin Cream
Because of the valuable knowledge gained during that small research group, chemotherapy skin cream seems to have a bright future. It is believed that it can not only be used as a health treatment, but as a beauty treatment as well to relieve us of wrinkled skin. Before it will be approved and marketed for this purpose, however, more research will have to be conducted.
The treatment will also have to be applied in a medical setting, and not at home, unless researchers can find a way to make the treatment less harsh. In the meantime, however, this treatment is currently available for the purpose of preventing skin cancer where that possibility is fairly high. Unfortunately, the cream cannot be used effectively for the treatment of other types of cancer at this time.
