Cautions of Tummy Tuck Cosmetic Surgery

If you are planning to have a tummy tuck, you may think that this is an easy no-risk procedure. The fact is that with any surgical procedure there are risks, and there are risks that are associated with tummy tucks as well. You need to know the cautions of tummy tuck cosmetic surgery before you go under the knife.

Infection is a Big Concern with Tummy Tucks

Infection is a huge concern with any surgical procedure. You can die from infection if it isn’t caught and treated early. You need to recognize the signs of infection, which include fever and chills, redness at the site, and pus and drainage. If you see these signs, call your doctor right away so that you can get started on a regimen of antibiotics.

Because surgical procedures take place in hospitals, you must also be on the lookout for staph infections. The staph could present itself at the site of your surgery – or any other part of your body. While you are in the hospital, use hand sanitizer often, and make sure that the medical staph is as well.

Beware of Blood Clots

Anyone can get a blood clot, but surgery that uses anesthesia, where you are kept under for thirty minutes or more increases your risk of developing blood clots. Blood clots reduce or cut off circulation, and they can also break free and travel to the heart, lungs, or even the brain and cause death.

The highest risk of blood clots occurs within the first few days after a surgery. Most hospitals will have you wear compression stockings, and while these stockings are hot and uncomfortable, they are necessary, and they should be used for at least three to four days following your surgery.

Additional Dangers of Tummy Tuck Cosmetic Surgery

Other dangers associated with tummy tucks include excessive bleeding, slow healing, puckering skin, a dying belly button, seroma, scarring, swelling, and reactions to the medications that are used.

Before your surgery, you need to have a candid conversation with your doctor concerning all of the potential risks involved, and have each risk explained to you. Also have your doctor tell you what you can do to help cut the risk factors associated with your tummy tuck surgery. For example, if you smoke, your doctor should advise you to abstain from smoking for at least two weeks before your surgery. Take his or her advice seriously, and follow it to the letter.
