Fruits and vegetables are not naturally toxic. Instead, they become toxic when they come into contact with toxins, such as pesticide. This is why people have really started to pay attention to what they are buying, and why they seek organic products above all others – even though organic products are harder to find, and more expensive to buy.

When conventional growing methods are used, you will be subjected to those pesticides and other toxins that are used during that process – unless you do not consume the produce. These toxins can affect your immune system, your reproductive system, your nervous system, and your hormone production.

What Are the Most Toxic Fresh Fruits and Vegetables?

The most toxic fruits and vegetables include sweet bell peppers, apples, peaches, nectarines, strawberries, grapes, spinach, lettuce, celery, cherries, pears, and potatoes. In fact, in the food industry, these fruits and vegetables are known as the dirty dozen.

The Environmental Work Group, an organization that was established in Washington, D.C., has found that these twelve fruits and vegetables tend to have the highest levels of toxins, in the form of pesticides that are used during the growing process. In fact approximately twenty different pesticides are used during the growing process for these fruits and vegetables.

How Can You Avoid Toxic Fresh Fruits and Vegetables?

You may think that you can wash or peel the fruits and vegetables, and that you then wouldn’t have to worry about the toxins that they contain. This isn’t actually true. Just as your skin absorbs whatever it comes into contact with, to some degree, the skin of these fruits and vegetables can also absorb the pesticides that are used.

Processing these fruits and vegetables, such as the canning process, can eliminate some of the toxins, but it can never eliminate all of them. What this means is that you have two choices if you want to make sure that you get fresh fruits and vegetables that will not be toxic. You will either have to grow your own or shop for organic fruits and vegetables.
