The disease cannot be cured but it can be managed. Some persons use a combination of prescription drugs and lifestyle choices to control their symptoms. Some lifestyle changes include not smoking or learning and avoiding triggers such as dust and other pollutants.

What is Boswellia

One of the gifts presented by the wise men in the Nativity story is Frankincense. However, not many persons know what and where Frankincense comes from. This aromatic incense is a by-product of the gum taken from the Boswellia plant. Boswellia is also known as Shallaki.

This large tree grows primarily in India, the Middle East and North Africa. It is most often found in Somalia in North Africa and Saudi Arabia in the Middle East. There are many species of Boswellia and the frankincense made from each is different.

How Does Boswellia Help with Asthma

The resin taken from the trunk of a tree has long been used in herbal medicine as an anti-inflammatory treatment. Boswellia is said to greatly reduce the frequency and severity of attacks in asthmatics. It is also commonly used to treat joint aliments such as arthritis.

Boswellia or frankincense is used in a number of ways to treat asthma and so control the symptoms. These include:

Aromatherapy:  Since many asthmatics react badly to scents and fragrances it is best not to use aromatherapy treatment in its full strength. In fact, it is always better to use aromatherapy after an attack and not during. This will minimize the risk of making the situation worse.

Tea: A mild tea is brewed with frankincense for treating coughs and asthma. It is normally mixed with some herb or spice such as myrrh or turmeric.

Tablets/pills: many persons take herbal pills of the product to help control their asthma. Dosage varies but some reports indicate that three tablets three times daily is the average.

The effect of Boswellia on asthma is currently being studied in greater detail. One reason why it is believed to work at controlling asthma symptoms is its anti-inflammatory properties.

    Side Effects

There are few side effects from using Boswellia although some persons develop a skin rash or have a bout of diarrhea and stomach ache. Pregnant women and persons with compromised immune systems are advised not to use Boswellia.
