There are a multitude of birth control options available today. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Some methods are more effective than other methods. It is important to remember that there is only one totally completely effective method of birth control and that is abstinence.

Birth Control Effectiveness – Most Successful
Typically birth control methods that require no effort by the user are highly effective. They are usually 99%-99.9% effective.
These types of birth control include injections such as depo provera, implantation of IUD devices and surgical procedures such as tubal ligations and vasectomies.
Surgical birth control methods should only be considered when you do not want to have any more children as they are considered to be permanent.
Birth Control Effectiveness – High Success Rates
These methods have varying effective rates or 95-98%, based on how well they are used. Birth control pills, birth control patches, NuvaRing and the lactational amenorrhea method (LAM).
Birth control pills contain hormones, either estrogen or progestin, or a combination of the two. They are taken daily to prevent the ovaries from releasing the eggs into the fallopian tubes. If you miss a pill you may become pregnant. Furthermore taking some medications, such as antibiotics will reduce its effectiveness.
The birth control patch is worn on the skin of the upper torso, upper arm, buttocks or abdomen. It is applied weekly by the woman for 3 consecutive weeks and then left off for one week. The effectiveness of this method can be changed if the user forgets to apply the patch, or the patch comes off unknown to the user.
LAM is only effective for the first 6 months while breastfeeding. It is also not reliable if you have had a period after giving birth. The use of this method requires that you feed your baby consistently with both breasts at least 6 to 8 times in a 24 hour period.
Birth Control Effectiveness – Moderate Success Rates
Barrier methods of birth control generally have a success rate of approximately 99%. These methods include the male condom, female condom, cervical cap, diaphragm, sponge and spermicidal creams.
Barrier methods of birth control are designed to prevent the sperm from reaching the egg. They are not fool proof, if not used correctly that will not be as effective.
Natural family planning methods such as the calendar method, abstinence during ovulation and high risk time periods, withdrawal prior to ejaculation are generally 99% effective.
