Are Frozen Foods Healthy?

We live very busy lives, and because of this, we are constantly on the lookout for ways to make our lives less complicated, and ways to get things done much faster. We have even carried this endeavor over to the foods that we eat. What Happens to the Nutritional Value in Food when it is Frozen?

Typically when a manufacturer freezes food, they do it almost instantly. This is especially true in the case of vegetables and fruits. They will also typically allow the vegetables and fruits to stay in the field for a longer period of time to become as ripe as possible, without becoming over ripe.

A technique known as flash freezing is often used, which causes the food to freeze solid in a very short period of time. When this is done, however, the food will lose some level of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients – but not all of them. The freezing process retains the remaining vitamins and minerals in the food.

Are Frozen Foods as Healthy as Fresh Foods?

Naturally, whether a frozen food is healthy or not starts with what the food actually is. Frozen pancakes with syrup aren’t really a good choice, unless they are whole grain pancakes with sugar-free syrup. You must first think about the healthy foods that you might cook, and then search for their frozen counterparts.

It is important to note that because foods do lose some of their vitamins when they are frozen, it is always healthier to choose fresh foods if those foods are in season. For example, if you purchase frozen berries most of the year, buy those berries fresh when they are in season. In the end, fresh foods are healthier, but this does not make frozen food unhealthy.

How You Cook Frozen Foods Matters

You must be aware of the best way to cook frozen foods. Experts agree that you should keep the food frozen until you are ready to cook it, as this allows the food to retain more of the vitamins and minerals that it has retained. When the food is thawed first vegetables will lose a great deal of the vitamin C that they contain. It is also important to realize that many experts agree that it is better to heat frozen foods on the stove, instead of the microwave, because the microwave can also destroy many of the vitamins and nutrients found in the food.
