American Food Pyramid

The food pyramid that most persons are familiar with is no more. It was replaced by what is now called, MyPyramid. The new food pyramid is supposed to be better for Americans and offers a healthier way to maximize health while eating properly. The new pyramid now has six levels instead of four and less focus is placed on counting calories. Exercise is now included on the new food pyramid. The pyramid is no longer tiered but rather vertically divided. All the food groups are color coded so that it is easy to understand the pyramid. The three largest vertical segments are grains, vegetables and milk. Based on a 2000 calorie diet, 6 ounces of grains, 3 cups of milk, and 2.5 cups of vegetables is the daily recommendation. Also recommended for a healthy diet are 2 cups of fruits and 5.5 ounces of meat, preferably lean cuts, seafood and beans,. Very little oil is allowed, with most preferably from plant-based sources. In addition to the sections on the pyramid, there are bits of information supplied to go along with it. This outlines how much exercise is needed per day for weight loss or to maintain a healthy weight. Based on the new North American Pyramid, more than half of the grains consumed should be whole grain.
