Aromatherapy has become increasingly popular as a modality to improve general health and reduce stress. It has been proven that the sense of smell is a receptor that can influence the brain and body tremendously. There are many ways to take advantage of aromatherapy, but aromatherapy candles have emerged as one of the easiest ways to receive the benefit of essential oils.

Aromatherapy candles are special candles that are scented by the essential oils of plants, flowers and trees. These oils are extracted in a variety of ways, including steam distillation, cold pressing and solvent extraction.

Essential oils are concentrated, volatile substances that each have a host of health benefits, such as being anti-inflammatory, regulating the female menstrual cycle and cleansing the body internally. There are also numerous mental and emotional health benefits, such as stress reduction, treatment of depression and reduction in migraine headaches.

Aromatherapy, including the use of aromatherapy candles, is part of the resurgence of homeopathic modalities available to treat mental and bodily health. While the effective use of essential oils requires some knowledge and skill, the average person can use aromatherapy candles with very little specialized knowledge and reap many benefits.

Aromatherapy Candle History

Candles have been in existence in some form or another for thousands of years. However, originally, they were made from tallow-the fat of cows and sheep. The tallow candles let off an unpleasant smell, which the ancient Egyptians combated by adding essential oils to the candles. The Egyptians already used the oils and plant essences in healing and burial rites, but also discovered that when released into the air through candles, there were additional mood altering benefits as well.

Tallow candles were also used by the ancient Romans and many other societies. It was not until after the fifteenth century that beeswax candles were introduced, which was a cleaner burning and less offensive source of light. However, beeswax was relatively expensive and only the higher classes could afford beeswax candles with regularity. The majority of the population continued to use tallow candles for quite some time.

Around 1800, Spermaceti was discovered, which is a wax derived from the oil of sperm whales. Spermaceti was mixed with the previously undesirable tallow and resulted in a harder, longer lasting and less smoky candle-which was a vast improvement. In 1825, wicks were introduced, which allowed candles to burn even longer.

Paraffin wax was discovered 25 years later, which is a byproduct of crude oil. The Paraffin is processed, bleached and deodorized for commercial use. It can be molded into any form and is long burning, which is why it is still largely used today.

Types of Aromatherapy Candles

For those who are interested in using Aromatherapy candles, there are various forms in which they are available. The most popular are:

Container Candles: These are candles where the wax mixture has been poured into non-flammable glass or ceramic containers. A wick is added before the wax fully hardens. Many like container candles because they are usually large in size, make good gifts and can be capped between uses.

Pillar Candles: Usually more of a decorative item, pillar candles are increasingly being scented with pure essential oils and used for aromatherapy. These large candles are usually round or rectangular and may sit atop decorative stands or trays,

Floating Candles: This type of candle is made specifically to float in liquid, which may be a bowl of water or even the bathtub. Floating candles aid in creating a relaxing environment, which allows for maximum sensory awareness and absorption.

Votive Candles: These smaller candles are approximately two to three inches high. They can be burned conveniently in any heat resistant container and is the most size candle most frequently produced.

When selecting aromatherapy candles, the quality of the wax used is critical to receiving the maximum health benefits, versus potentially harming your body. Many purchase candles without examining the quality and are unknowingly inhaling harmful elements.

Types of Wax

Paraffin Wax- Paraffin is one of the most common, yet most harmful waxes available. Paraffin is a by-product of crude oil, meaning it is actually the waste that is left over once the crude petroleum oil has been refined.

To make the crude waste residue usable, it is heavily bleached and deodorized. This results in the white, waxy substance that is used to produce the candles most of us are used to. The resulting candle looks pristine and harmless, however, recent studies have shown otherwise.

Some of the drawbacks of Paraffin wax include:

When lit, Paraffin emits petro-carbon soot, which in large quantities can blacken walls, as well as your lungs.

Paraffin emits toxins such as alkans, alkenes and toluene, which can lead to lung cancer

Paraffin has caused breathing problems for people with asthma

The soot can become lodged in your ventilation system and continuously contaminate the air

Daily, or even frequent use of Paraffin candles greatly increase the risk of respiratory cancer or illness.

As an alternative to potentially harmful Paraffin wax candles, natural wax candles are available. Because they are derived from plant matter, vegetable wax does not contain the same inherent harms as Paraffin. One o the most popular natural waxes on the market today is Soy.

Soy Candles are advisable for the candle enthusiast who is concerned with their health, as well as the environment. Below are the various benefits of using Soy candles in aromatherapy:

Soy wax burns cleaner, with minimal soot that does not contain toxins, allowing for inhalation of only beneficial elements.

Soy wax is more economical, as it burns longer than Paraffin wax.

Soy wax does not harm the environment, as it is produced from a natural vegetable source.

Purchasing Soy candles helps to support the farm economy.

Soy candles aid in the sustainability movement, as they are a naturally renewable form of light and aromatherapy.

It is important to note that because of its consistency, soy was is unable to be molded into pillar or votive candles and will normally be in the form of container candles. There are however, some pillar and votive candles that are a mix of soy and palm or bees wax, thus giving the candle the desired consistency for molding. Stearic acid is also often used as a hardening agent. When purchasing soy candles, be sure to understand the exact ingredients.

Palm oil wax is another alternative for making candles. This wax is derived from the oil palm trees in India and has increased in popularity in recent years. The fruit of the tree is harvested, pressed and refined to produce many products, including palm wax.

Palm wax has become popular with professional candle makers, as well as hobbyists for the following reasons:

When sourced in a responsible manner, Palm wax represents a natural and renewable source of wax, without the harms inherent in Paraffin wax.

Palm wax is more flexible in molding and can be used to make votives and pillar candles, as well as traditional container candles.

Palm wax is less expensive than bees wax.

Palm wax holds the scent better than soy wax.

Some companies produce palm oil wax in an unsustainable manner than can lead to deforestation. However, there are ecologically minded producers that produce palm oil in a sustainable manner and will usually label their products as such.

Beeswax is excellent for crafting aromatherapy candles, but is the most expensive wax available. However, the expense may be justified, as beeswax candles have twice the lifespan of soy candles and three times the longevity of their paraffin counterparts. Below are added benefits of using beeswax candles:

Beeswax has a naturally sweet smell, which blends well with essential oils.

Beeswax has the longest burning time.

Beeswax burns cleanly, without emitting toxic soot.

Beeswax emits negative ions as it burns, which improves air quality.

Beeswax is sourced from bee colonies and is highly sustainable.

When purchasing beeswax, look for wax that is a golden honey color. Lighter beeswax has been bleached. Also, ensure that the wax is 100% beeswax, as some manufacturers produce a mixture of beeswax and other oils, but still label it as beeswax.

Making a Choice

With one billion pounds of wax used to make candles annually in the United States, using a cleaner burning, non toxic wax has great benefit for the environment. Although some may decry the use of palm oil wax due to deforestation, others may see it as a better alternative Paraffin and gel waxes. Soy wax has become highly preferred and beeswax seems to be the most ecologically beneficial of all the waxes.

How to Make Aromatherapy Candles

Click here to view the embedded video.

As candles are relatively easy to make, they are an enjoyable hobby for many. There are an infinite number of essential oil blends that can be mixed to suit any mood. Some individuals make candles simply for providing a pleasant smell or as gifts. Others may want to seriously study the best formulations for treating specific maladies through aromatherapy.

If you are interested in making aromatherapy candles, below are the common ingredients that are required. Variations can be made in the oils used, as well as the type of molds and pouring technique.

To make aromatherapy candles you will need:

Your choice of wax

Candle molds, usually aluminum tin, or disposable molds.

A double boiler or wax melter

Candle wicks in the appropriate size

Essential oils

Gloves

Sharp knife and mixing spoon

A clear surface covered in newspaper

Bamboo skewers or another means of suspending the candle wicks

The following are general guidelines for making candles. Experiment with shapes, size and scent until you are pleased with the finished product.

1/Melt wax in the double broiler.
2/Cut the wick to the desired length, and then use small tongs to dip it in the melted wax
3/Lay the wick out to dry and harden, ensuring that it is straight
4/Add essential oils to melted wax
5/Pour wax into molds and let harden
6/When the candle is partially hard, use a skewer or candle threader to pierce a hole into the center of the candle
7/Insert the wick
8/Reheat wax (slightly hotter than the first time) and pour an additional layer of wax in the mold, obscuring the hole made when threading the wick.
9/Suspend the top of the wick, so that it does not fall into the hardening wax. Wooden or bamboo kabob skewers work well.
10/Let candles fully cool, then remove from the mold

Safety Precautions

Wax should not be heated over 250 degrees, as the flash point it 300 degrees.

Exercise extreme caution and wear gloves, as wax is molten when heated and can burn badly.

Cover the candle making surface with newspaper to prevent damaging the table.

Remove any unnecessary items from the preparation area.

Once created, aromatherapy candles have a long shelf life. They can be stored for future use, given as gifts or sold. The convenience and health benefits of aromatherapy candles make them a welcome and inexpensive addition to any holistic health regimen.

Essential oils and aromatherapy have been common healing and therapeutic methods since the first century. There is also documented evidence of essential oils being used by the ancient Egyptian Pharos, who prized the pure plant essence more than gold. Coveted by European Crusaders and primitive South American tribes alike, aromatherapy using essential oils has been one of the most enduring natural healing modalities for almost two millennia.

Over the centuries, the extraction and use of essential plant oil has become more widespread, with new, more modern extraction methods developed. Although the industrialization and regulation of the medical field in the last century had labeled homeopathic practices such as aromatherapy as arcane and unscientific, resurgence in the use of essential oils has occurred in the last fifty years as many discovered the old remedies and found relief in their application.

Benefits of Essential Oils

The uses for essential oils are as varied as the types of oil available. These potent oils are used for relaxation, as anti-bacterial agents and to promote healing. Many essential oils are multidimensional, possessing both physical and emotional healing properties. Below are the most common essential oils, along with their uses.

It is first important to note that some essential oils should not be used by individuals with specific conditions, which are noted below. In addition, essential oils are extremely volatile and potent. They should never be applied directly to the skin without first being diluted in a stable carrier oil, such as grape seed oil.

When used effectively, essential oils can have a very positive affect on health, mood and wellbeing. Also, oils are often mixed with each other to form what is called a synergy-meaning that the resulting oil is highly restorative and more effective than either oil on its own. Common essential oils and synergistic blends are as follows:

Angelica Root (Angelica, Archangelica)

A member of the Ombellifere family Angelica root is thought to have spiritual properties and has been labeled the “Root of the Holy Spirit”. The name comes from an old tale of a monk who was given the plant by an angel as a cure to the Bubonic plague, which was running rampant at the time. Originating in Europe, Angelica root essential oil has a woodsy scent and many curative benefits.

Health Benefits: Angelica root essential oil is detoxifying and has been used to reduce alcoholic cravings. This oil has anti-inflammatory properties and helps relieves pain in the joints, as well as muscles.

Emotional Benefits: Angelica root essential oil has been used to reduce stress and anxiety reliever and also as an aid in increasing energy.

Warnings: Angelica root is phototoxic, which means skin treated with the oil should not be exposed to direct sunlight for twenty four hours. Angelica root should also be avoided by diabetics and pregnant women.

Anise ( Pimpinella Anisum)

For anyone who has ever visited a physician complaining of stress, muscle pain, joint pain, you likely expect more traditional and conventional means of treatment. You may expect your doctor to write you a prescription for anti-anxiety medication or a pain reliever. You may also expect your doctor to send you to physical therapy or give you an injection to relieve your pain. This is not always the case. More and more medical doctors — MDs — are turning to less conventional means of treatment to help get their patient’s on track to a healthier happier life. Concerned, don’t be. MDs prescribing alternative medicine methods for their patients, but for themselves as well. A new study indicates that doctors and nurses are more likely to use alternative and complementary medicine more than any other professionals.

Alternative Medicine Practices by Medical Doctors

In a study conducted by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Harvard Medical School, research indicates that more than one-third of Americans are using at least one form of alternative or complimentary medicine. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center indicates that this number of likely to continue to rise based on the use of mind-body therapies. Mind-body therapies can include yoga, deep breathing exercises and meditation. Other mind-body therapies not included in this particular study are meditation, visualization techniques and a form of exercise known as tai chi.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center along with the Harvard Medical School have found that nearly one in 30 Americans who are using mind-body therapies are doing so at the advice of their medical provider. While there is good evidence to back the use of mind-body therapies, researchers were shocked to find how many medical providers were referring their patients to these forms of complementary medicine.

Many providers are referring their patients to these types of treatments as a last resort. When more conventional therapeutic treatments for a variety of health ailments fail, traditional medical doctors are more than willing to make the referral to a healthcare service outside of their normal scope of treatment. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center indicates that individuals referred to mind-body therapies by their healthcare providers are often sicker and spend more time and money on healthcare than those who self-refer to mind-body therapies. Researchers working on this study often wonder if pain and suffering of these patients could have been treated or prevented if doctor’s would consider the use of mind-body therapies early on in treatment and not wait to use these types of therapies as a last resort. However, this consideration has yet to be studied.

The data collected during this study indicates that mind-body therapies have become more of a mainstream approach to healthcare. However, more research is needed to provide patients and healthcare providers with accurate information when it comes to the use of mind-body therapies for a variety of health ailments.

Health Services Research Journal Study

In a 2011 study released in the august edition of Health Services Research journal, researchers have found that health care workers (including doctors and nurses) are more likely to use alternative and complementary medicine more than any other profession. This study indicates that 76 percent of health care workers have indicated they have tried a form of alternative medicine. Only 63 percent of the general public have given alternative and complimentary medicine a try.

This study surveyed 14,329 working adults; only 10 percent who were healthcare workers. The health care workers included doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, technicians, support workers and administrative personnel. According to the study, doctors and nurses were twice as likely to visit a complementary and alternative medicine health practitioner and three times more likely to self-treat with these methods.

According to Joya Lynn-Schoen, MD (a psychiatrist who practices alternative medicine), healthcare workers are more educated on the issues of alternative medicine. This makes these workers more likely to try out and use alternative medicine. The most common reason for a doctor or nurse to use alternative medicine is general wellness, followed by the expenses that come along with conventional medicine.

With lines crossed, alternative medicine and conventional medicine may provide an entirely new means of treating patients. Healthcare providers may be able to optimize the health of a whole person by combining traditional and alternative means of treatment.

Ginko biloba has also be studied in patients following chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy can sometimes lead to mental fogginess. Research conducted in the 1990′s seemed promising. However, research in the 2000′s indicates ginko biloba can be not be beneficial for the health of your brain and the prevention of dementia. The antioxidant properties of ginko biloba, however, can be beneficial in protecting your body from harm.

Chrondoitin is typically used with glucosamine and can often be purchased as a combination herbal supplement.

Proponents of chondroitin indicate it is beneficial in treating pain and swelling in individuals with arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. Research conducted on chondroitin proves it is less effective in the treatment of arthritis than its counterpart, glucosamine.

9 – Garlic

Garlic supplements — also referred to as Allium sativum — are believed to have many beneficial uses when it comes to your health. Allicin, which is a component of whole garlic, is the medically active ingredient in garlic. Allicin is placed into garlic supplements.

Garlic may also be beneficial in the treatment of infections and in helping to lower high blood pressure.

However, it is important to remember that not much scientific backing to the use of garlic as a supplement.
Commonly referred to as CoQ10 as well as ubiquinone, this coenzyme is produced by the body and is important in the a cell’s ability to produce energy. Patients with congestive heart failure, Parkinson’s disease and those on drugs to help reduce high cholesterol have been reported to have lower level of C0Q10 than healthy patients. Proponents of this coenzyme believe that the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease as well as those with muscle pain can be helped by supplementing CoQ10 on a daily basis. There is strong research to link coenzyme Q-10 to chronic heart failure.

Considerations and Warnings

Always consult your doctor prior to beginning use of herbs or supplements. Your doctor can provide you with the recommended amount for your age, weight and physical condition. Herbs and supplements should also not be given to children with out consulting a pediatrician — little research has been conducted on the use of herbs and supplements in individuals under the age of 18. Herbs and supplements can sometimes have interactions with prescription medications. There is evidence indicating herbs can interfere with medical treatments — including chemotherapy.

It is important to remember that herbs and supplements are not guaranteed to make you feel better or improve your health condition. There is limited research backing the use of herbs as a replacement for conventional medical treatment. An herbal treatment that yields results for one individual may not bring any results to another individual. Herbs and supplements may also be used in conjunction with traditional medical treatments.

Discontinue use of herbs and supplements if you are experiencing signs of an allergic reaction and seek appropriate medical attention.

Tea is one of the most popular beverages in the world, second only to water. Oolong and green tea are closely related and they are both produced from the camellia sinensis plant. Both teas are used medicinally to help prevent and treat a number of health conditions, one of which is diabetes.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that is characterized by chronic high blood sugar levels due to insulin problems. Insulin is the hormone that is responsible for regulating blood-sugar levels and individuals with type 1 diabetes, which is sometimes referred to as Juvenile diabetes do not produce enough insulin to properly control blood sugar levels. Individuals with type 2 diabetes may produce enough insulin but they are insensitive or resistant to it. Oolong and green tea are helpful for managing type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and green tea can also help to reduce your risk for developing both types of diabetes.

Green Tea for Prevention

Many studies have been conducted to examine the antidiabetic effects of drinking green tea. The “Journal of General Internal Medicine” conducted a meta-analysis of 9 such studies to evaluate the association between green tea consumption and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The journal concluded that a high intake of tea can in fact help to reduce the risk for type 2 diabetes. In fact, people who drank four or more cups of green tea per day had a 20% lower risk or developing type 2 diabetes, compared to those who drank less than 4 cups or no tea at all. Animal studies also suggest that green tea can help prevent the development of type 1 diabetes and slow its progression if it has already developed. It should be noted that only green tea produced a preventative effect and black and oolong tea do not appear to reduce the risk.

How Tea Helps to Prevent Diabetes

The exact way that green tea helps to reduce the risk for developing diabetes is unknown. However, studies done on mice suggest the polyphenols in green tea, in particular a catechins called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), mimic the effects of insulin. In so doing, they increase the body’s ability to metabolize glucose and thereby help to keep blood sugar levels from soaring too high. In addition, green tea appears to increase fat metabolism and prevent obesity, which is helpful because obesity sets the stage for diabetes.

Tea to Help Treat Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes usually begins during childhood and it is incurable. These individuals require insulin shots and there is currently no substitute for this treatment. However, drinking green or oolong tea daily can work adjunctively with insulin shots. Tea can help to enhance the body’s ability to utilize insulin and drinking 4 to 6 cups daily may therefore help to reduce the dose of insulin that is required. In addition, the regular consumption of tea has been found to help slow the progression of type 1 diabetes once it is established.

Tea to Help Treat Type 2 Diabetes

Type-2 diabetes is a disease that results primarily from lifestyle factors. Following a proper diet and exercise routine can reverse type 2 diabetes and both green and oolong tea can work adjunctively to facilitate the reversal. Green tea has been found to improve sensitivity to insulin and enhance glucose tolerance. It also helps to block the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream and prevent blood glucose levels from rising too high.

Oolong tea is also beneficial for the management of type 2 diabetes. In fact, a one month study done on type 2 diabetics found that drinking 6 cups of oolong tea daily reduced participants blood glucose levels from 229 to 162 milligrams/deciliter. Another study used 4.5 cups of oolong tea daily, and it resulted in a marked decrease in A1C levels, which is the measure used to calculate an individuals average blood glucose levels over a three month period.

According to the American Diabetes Associations, oolong tea is especially beneficial as an adjunct to oral hyperglycemic drugs. A study done on individuals taking oral hyperglycemic drugs along with oolong tea, found a significant lowering of blood glucose levels over participants who were taking the drugs with water alone.

Tea and Secondary Diabetic Disorders

Obesity and diabetes are often intertwined, with obesity being both a cause of, and an exacerbating factor of, diabetes. A recent study cited in the June 2011 edition of “Alternative Medicine Review” journal, examined the effects of a decaffeinated green tea extract providing 865 mg of EGCG daily on obese individuals with type 2 diabetes. The individuals taking the green tea extract experienced not only an improvement in insulin levels but also a significant reduction in waist circumference. Other studies have confirmed that green tea improves the metabolism of fat and aids in weight loss. This is significant because weight loss helps to reverse type 2 diabetes and to slow the progression of type 1.

A high intake of tea can also help to reduce blood pressure, as well as the unhealthy LDL and total cholesterol levels; all three of which can lead to, or worsen, cardiovascular disease. In addition, tea has been found to increase the healthy HDL cholesterol levels, help prevent atherosclerosis and to promote overall cardiovascular health. This is important because cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in diabetics, and diabetics are also as at a greater risk for developing it.

How to Optimize the Antidiabetic Effects of Tea

Studies suggest that 4 to 6 cups per day of tea is the optimum amount for both preventative and curative purposes. For the best results, do not to add cows milk, soy milk or any other type of milk to your tea, because they will decrease the positive effects that tea has on insulin (see reference 1, page 149). On the other hand, adding a squeeze of fresh lemon juice has been found to enhance the antidiabetic effects of both green and oolong tea.

Approximately 41% of Americans will develop cancer in their lifetime and about 21% will die from it. Recently, researchers have started to examine the role of ones diet in the prevention of cancer. The following foods are being touted as cancer-fighting “superfoods” due to their ability to reduce the risk of developing cancer and support the health of individuals who are currently suffering with it.

Garlic

Garlic is well-known for its immune system boosting properties, but did you know that it may also help to both prevent and treat cancer? According to the National Cancer Institute, several population studies suggest that an increased intake of raw and/or cooked garlic is associated with a reduced risk of certain cancers, including stomach, pancreas, breast, colon, intestinal and esophagus. The exact way that garlic helps to prevent cancer is unknown, however researchers speculate that garlic’s antibacterial properties may be partially responsible. Garlic may also help to fight cancer by helping to block the formation of cancer-causing substances in the body and reduce the proliferation of cancerous cells.[i] To obtain the cancer fighting benefits of garlic, the World Health Organization recommends consuming one clove of garlic or 0.4-1.2g of dried garlic powder daily.

Berries

Numerous studies suggest that fruits have powerful cancer preventative properties. Fruits contain a nutrient called ellagic acid which has been found to be anticarcinogenic, meaning it helps to reduce and eliminate harmful cancer-causing substances from your body and to prevent the formation and proliferation of tumors. Although many fruits contain ellagic acid, berries contain the highest amount and are therefore considered the most potent cancer-fighting fruits. In fact, clinical trials conducted on rats at Ohio State University’s Medical Center found that consuming berries regularly can not only help to slow the growth of pre-malignant cells but also help to kill them off completely. [ii]

Tumeric

Turmeric is a spice that is derived from the roots and rhizomes of the curcuma longa plant. It is commonly used in Indian cuisines such as curry and it has also been used medicinally in India for over 4,000 years. Consuming turmeric regularly can help to both prevent and treat cancer. Specifically, a high intake of turmeric has been found to reduce the rate of lung, prostate and colorectal cancer. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, turmeric’s cancer fighting properties are two-fold.[iii] Firstly, turmeric is a potent antioxidant, and it can help to prevent free radicals from damaging your cells and DNA, which is beneficial because free radical damage is associated with cancer. Secondly, turmeric helps to inhibit angiogenesis, which means that it prevents the formation of new blood vessels. This is beneficial because tumors require blood vessels to supply them with the nourishment necessary to thrive. By preventing the growth of new blood vessels, turmeric helps to starve and ultimately kill tumor cells.

Noni Juice

Noni juice is the juice that is extracted from the fruit of the noni tree, which grows in many tropical regions throughout the world. It is commonly sold in grocery stores and health food stores and it is thought to possess numerous health-promoting properties, one of which is the prevention of cancer. According to a study published in the December 2001 edition of “Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences,” noni is a potent source of antioxidants. The specific antioxidant activity of noni appear to help reduce the risk for cancer by neutralizing cancer causing substances in your body and preventing them from causing damage to your DNA. [iv] Only a small amount of noni juice is required to gain the cancer-fighting effects of noni, and you should take it is as directed on the bottle. For the best results, it is recommended that you drink noni juice first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach.

Tomatoes

A study cited in the Feb 1999 issue of the “Journal of the National Cancer Institute” found that a higher intake of tomatoes was associated with a reduced risk of a number of cancers. A diet high in tomato based products was found to be especially helpful at reducing the risk of stomach, lung and prostate cancer, whilst also moderately lowering the risk for pancreas, colon, rectum, esophagus, oral, breast and cervix cancer. [v] The lycopene found in tomatoes, is the nutrient that is primarily responsible for their cancer fighting properties. Studies have found that cooking tomatoes enhances the benefits of lycopene, so pasta sauces and pizza sauces are considered especially beneficial.

Green Tea

Population studies suggest that people who drink green tea regularly are less likely to develop cancer. Polyphenols found in green tea helps to inhibit the formation of certain cancer cells, and preliminary research suggests that drinking green tea regularly may help to reduce your risk of developing breast, bladder, esophageal, lung, pancreatic, stomach, skin and colon cancer. [vi] In addition, drinking green tea may also help to treat certain types of cancer. One study found that bladder cancer patients who regularly drank green tea had a substantially higher 5-year survival rate than patients who did not. For the best results, it is suggested that you drink 2 to 3 glasses of green tea per day.

You may or may not have heard of something called melatonin which is supposedly used as a sleep aid. Just as with anything else, some people swear by it while others do not like to use the all natural supplement. With that being said, the only way for someone to make a choice to use it is to become educated on all aspects of melatonin. Before using it or continuing to use it, you should be made aware of what it is, how it works exactly, any positive or negative side effects, as well as any studies related to it.

What is Melatonin and How Does it Work?

In short, melatonin is a sleep hormone that helps to regulate ones sleeping cycles. Made by the pineal gland, this hormone controls your cycles of sleep as well as when your body is awake. Everyone has their own internal clock which is in control of when they sleep and they are awake. The clock controls the production of melatonin where typically, the levels are higher in the evening and then drop in the morning hours. Light plays a major role in how much melatonin your body creates. For example, the shorter days during the months of the winter, your melatonin production may change causing issues with your sleeping patterns. As people age so does their levels of melatonin. Typically these levels will peak around the age of twenty, but from then on, gradually decline until the age eighty and older.

On top of being a natural sleep aid, it is also an antioxidant, anti depressant, and an anti-aging agent. Because of this, melatonin is used in many different supplements for different purposes. Melatonin is released from our brains at the point when our eyes sense the dark. It is how our bodies are able to regulate our sleeping patterns. The actual melatonin supplements work to stimulate melatonin.

When to Use Melatonin

When melatonin is used as a dietary supplement it is used by those who may have things such as jet lag or general sleep problems. Scientists also believe that melatonin can be beneficial for those who have SAD (seasonal affective disorder), help those who work night shifts so that they can better control their sleep patterns, and for those who have chronic headaches. It can also supposedly help to reduce or prevent issues with sleeping after a surgery. People who are blind are also being studied while using melatonin. Since they are not able to see light, their sleeping patterns may be disturbed.

Other Uses for Melatonin

Melatonin is used for a number of different things and not just as a sleep aid. It has been studied in the treatment of cancer, depression, and even cardiovascular diseases. It can also help treat immune disorders, sexual dysfunction, and cardiac rhythm sleep disorders. Research has even shown that melatonin may play a role in modifying the impact of drugs on its user, such as cocaine.

Breast Cancer
Out of the Bassett Research Institute in Cooperstown, New York, David E. Blask, shares his findings of the melatonin hormone and how it can help those with breast cancer. Within his experiment he took lab mice, exposed them to breast cancer, and placed them under constant light which enhanced the tumor growth. Specifically, the light made the cancer grow seven times faster as it soaked up large amounts of linoleic acid. His research showed however, that at night the cancer “sleeps”. When the lights are off, the cancer doesn’t progress as much. His finding may explain why many nurses who work night shift are more likely to have cancer such as breast and colon cancer. In short, melatonin not only can help you sleep, but puts cancers to sleep as well! Melatonin slows breast cancer growth by 10 percent.

Seasonal Affective Disorder
Melatonin is also known for assisting those who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD. This is a type of depression that is triggered from different seasons of the year. The most common season which negatively impact individuals are the months of winter. Referred to as winter-onset depression, the symptoms begin during the late fall or earlier in the winter and will eventually go away in the summer. It is related to the changes in daylight we are exposed to during different times of the year. So you can see how melatonin can play a role in helping those with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Research done at the Oregon Health and Science University published a study on melatonin and this type of winter depression. Led by Alfred Lewy and colleagues at the OHSU Sleep and Mood Disorder Lab, they took 68 SAD patients and assigned each of them to one of three groups. Each group included the consumption of taking melatonin in the morning for an entire three week period. They did this study for four years, and as it concluded, it was found that when taking low doses of melatonin in the morning, it helped to improve their Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Cardiovascular Disease
A study found in The Lancet was done by researchers at the Institute for Cardiovascular Diagnosis and Therapy in Austria. The melatonin levels of two groups were observed. It included two women and 13 men who suffered from Heart Disease. The melatonin levels were measured in the afternoon and night time. Overall, the levels of melatonin found in the patients were significantly lower than the second group of healthy individuals. They actually showed levels of melatonin as five times less than that of the healthy patients. They found that when these lower levels are replenished, that this could be a very positive therapy for the patients and help create improvements. By maintaining ideal levels of melatonin it can work to prevent strokes, heart attacks, and other cardiovascular diseases.

Effects of Melatonin

Many people ponder if melatonin is safe and the answer is it impacts everyone differently. While it can be positive for many in helping them to improve their sleep patterns, others experience negative side effects. These include being over sleepy, a drop in body temperate, and even stomach problems. Some people will experience a change in blood vessels that can impact blood flow, while others may get headaches. Users may have nightmares or have grogginess in the morning.

Warnings

Like any other supplement, melatonin has warnings that come along with it. If you feel drowsy when taking it, do not operate any sort of machinery. If you are pregnant, you should not take melatonin. You should also always ask your doctor about taking melatonin because your interrupted sleep may be from a different medical condition. If your doctor says it is OK for you to take the supplement, also follow the right dosage and instructions.

What the Research Says

There has been several studies done on melatonin, mostly all leading in a positive direction in the supplement assisting in areas of sleep. A study done at the Wurtman Lab at MIT showed that not only did it help individuals to both fall asleep and stay asleep, but it also showed that that as we age, this becomes more difficult. Therefore, melatonin can help us with this. Certain doses of the melatonin supplement can bring back normal levels of the hormone that you once had when you were younger which help in correcting insomnia.

There has also been other studies that show melatonin supplements improve both sleep and cognitive impairment in patients with Alzheimer’s. Women with breast cancer show even lower levels of melatonin and experiments have found that low levels can create the growth of different types of cancer cells. By adding a melatonin supplement, growth may be minimized. In regards to mood disorders, studies have shown that melatonin and release timing of the hormone can alter someone with for example, bipolar affective disorder and SAD.

Sauerkraut is delicious on a hotdog or even plain, but can it possibly have health benefits as well? The word itself means “sour cabbage” and the process of fermentation is what sours the cabbage. When we think of sauerkraut we often refer to the canned cabbage along with vinegar but here we are referring to a healthier kind of sauerkraut. This is because in order to gain benefits from sauerkraut it can’t be canned at all.

The canning process is what kills any sort of nutrients or enzymes found within the cabbage. Here, when we talk about sauerkraut we are are talking about homemade kind which we will go over how to make. This is because it is fermented which is what you want. In the meantime, let’s understand how it can possible be so good for us!

Those Nasty Foods

There is no question that we all eat too many foods that are either packaged or purchased at a fast food “restaurant”. With this comes along indigestion that is painful, excess gas, burping, feelings of nausea, and all around nothing but bad things. Temporarily relief from these things includes using antacids or medications that are acid suppressing but the keyword being “temporary.” These solutions also suppress the digestive acids that are bodies actually need so they aren’t very good for us.

The Acid We Need!

We need acid! Hydrochloric acids help in the breakdown of our food so that it can move onto the next step and be digested. Also known as HCL, it also kills things that your body does not want such as parasites and bacteria. It is bad enough that as we age the amounts of HCL in our bodies will decrease. This happens because of things like stress, various illnesses, and just plain old age progression. It is at this point that we should try to give our bodies a break and by doing so, we should eat foods that are lighter. Instead, most of us will continue to eat those nasty foods causing acid reflux.

The Right Kind of Cabbage

The best way to work on restoring your system back to its natural digestion so that you don’t need to deal with acid reflux, burping, and so on, is by eating lactic acid fermented cabbage. This is because it has a ton of vitamin C as well as digestive enzymes which positively impacts the stomach. It helps to maintain even levels of HCL bringing harmony within your stomach! It will help to increase acidity when it is low and help to decrease acidity when it is up.

How Often Should You Consume Sauerkraut?

If you are seeking to gain these benefits from sauerkraut you should consume a little before each meal or with every meal, even more so when you eat heavy meals. If you would like, you may also drink a few tablespoons of the sauerkraut juice and it will actually help your stomach to feel better almost instantly. When it comes to drinking it, stay around 3 to 5 tablespoons per day.

Easy Sauerkraut Recipe

To make a very basic sauerkraut recipe you are going to need:

- 1 cabbage about medium size

- 1 tablespoon of sea salt

- Glass jar with lid

- 4 tablespoons of Kefir whey (unless you plan to use sauerkraut that is already fermented)

- 1 tablespoon of either chopped dill or caraway seed

Directions

Step 1: Using a knife, slice the cabbage or you can grate it if you like.

Step 2: Add in the salt and Kefir whey.

Step 3: Pound the mixture using either a pounder or a mallot. You will do this until there are juices visible.

Step 4: Add in the rest of the ingredients (chopped dill or caraway seed)

Step 5: Place in the glass jar, cover, and store for 3 to 5 days.

Note: You can store it in a cabinet or on the counter versus the refrigerator. After a few weeks, you can eat the sauerkraut but if you wait up to a month or longer, the flavor will be at its best!

There are several ways to make sauerkraut with this being just one of them! If you have a recipe to share with everyone, let us know! We would also like to know of anyone that has included sauerkraut (and not the canned kind) into their daily diet and if they have benefited from it. Perhaps you had issues with acid reflux or any of the other symptoms that indicated your stomachs acid levels were off. Don’t forget that you can incorporate the sauerkraut into your meal such as with salads, salsas, stir-fry’s, and much more! If you have any ideas on how to add it to your meal, we would love for you to share!

What Kelp Has to Offer you

Kelp has all sorts of nutrients which include vitamin B, magnesium, calcium, and its most important one of all, iodine. These are just few of its several healthy nutrients. Iodine is extremely important because it can help ones thyroid gland. If you are not aware of what it can do for your thyroid, it is this gland that is responsible for your energy levels and helps to metabolize fat. So you can see just how important it is! You may have heard of something called hypothyroidism which is caused by a deficiency in iron. This condition that is often over looked causes your thyroid to be under active. In many causes it is because the thyroid is lacking very important iodine.

Symptoms that Your Thyroid Needs Iodine

Some symptoms that you may experience from an under active thyroid includes feeling cold chills, having low levels of energy, gaining weight, feeling tired or fogged, and so on. While these are the symptoms, a blood test can be the real indicator however; often time’s patients are dismissed for the symptoms being caused by something else. Their thyroids will go without being properly treated.

Other Benefits of Kelp

Kelp is rich in calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which in turn strengthen our bones and heart. While both beneficial for men and women, women should consume kelp daily because it will assist in the replacement of the minerals lost during their menstrual cycle. Other benefits include helping with obesity, fatigue, constipation, and dry skin. It can also help with increasing blood cholesterol levels, assist with cold hands and feet, hair loss, poor digestion, assists in killing the herpes virus, and so on.

Where to Get Kelp and How to Consume it

You can decide to purchase kelp as a supplement in capsule or powered form, or you can take a trip to your local supermarket and visit the Asian section. There you will find a type of kelp called Nori which is the same type of seaweed you find in wrapping sushi. All you really need are these sheets, to which you then rip them up into smaller pieces and consume them with your meals or throughout your day. If you purchase the powder supplement, you can sprinkle this on your foods throughout the day. As for the capsule form, take as directed on the instructions. Many people will use kelp as a supplement for salt while others use it as ingredients in their recipes, for example, some will use it as a thickener for chicken soup.

It is important to point out that since there is so much iodine in kelp, you may want to reframe from taking other supplements if they have iodine in them as well. Just as with anything else, too much is not good for you! It is also important to point out that if you believe you have thyroid disease such as hypothyroidism, you should contact your doctor. Kelp alone is not used as a medication to resolve your thyroid issues.

Kelp in Skin Care Products?

Kelp assists in healing dry skin but it can also be found in various skin care products. It can actually help with aging because of its beneficial minerals and vitamins. It keeps the skin to not only stay moisturized but nourished as well. The seaweed contains seawater which is very similar to human plasma. This is how kelp acts like an anti aging system. It is also used in different creams to treat cellulite because it works to rejuvenate the body’s tissue and enhance circulation.

Oil of oregano receives a great amount of attention when it comes to treating a variety of illnesses. This includes sinus disorders, one of them being sinusitis. Although there are no actual published trials that prove this claim, many people state that it has worked. It does so because of its antibacterial properties as well as its antifungal properties which can help or prevent problems caused by both, fungi or bacteria.

What is Sinusitis?

This is when the inner lining of one’s sinuses swell. The actual sinuses are the spacing found between the face bones which is where air passes into the nose as well as drains fluids such as mucus. With sinusitis this passage is blocked because of the swelling which means that the mucus cannot properly drain. With an acute sinus infection a viral infection can occur which causes damage to the cells that make up the sinus lining. The mucus is at a standstill which causes a buildup of bacteria. With patients who have chronic sinusitis fungi growth can occur. This is more commonly seen in people who have weakened immune systems such as patients with AIDS, diabetes, or leukemia. It can actually be very painful! A mild sinus infection however, is common but is temporary. There is a buildup of pressure from the blockage which is what causes the pain. By using a simple treatment, it can be cured and rarely will a surgery be necessary to cure it.

Symptoms of Sinusitis

A sinus infection is the same thing as Sinusitis and has fairly obvious symptoms. Depending on which sinuses have been impacted will vary in symptoms, for example with acute sinusitis which is behind one’s eyes, there will be nasal congestion present, discharge, pressure in the eye area, and even an headache. With maxillary sinusitis which is located behind ones cheek bones, there will pain in the cheek area on one or both sides and one’s cheekbones may feel tender and be reddish in color.

Symptoms of this type will worsen when the head is upright, and you may even experience a fever. Frontal sinusitis is found behind the forehead and may cause severe headaches, a fever, worsened pain when the head is upright, and postnasal drip or discharge can occur. As we previously mentioned, chronic sinusitis found in patients with autoimmune deficiencies, will have high levels of pain when they wear glasses. They may experience a chronic sore through and even bad breath. They are likely to have chronic nasal discharge, discomfort on the node bridge area, and is this is reoccurring. If you have a sinus infection, you will experience some or all of these symptoms.

Using Oil of Oregano

Now that you know exactly what a sinus infection is and how to identify it, you are going to want to know how to use oil of oregano to help it. You are going to need to purchase some oil of oregano which can be found either online or at your local health store. The recommended dosage is to mix 2-3 drops of the oregano oil with a drink every day that you are experiencing the symptoms.

You can add it to juice if you would like. People claim to experience improvements after just three to five days. In the meantime you can also add in 2-3 drops of the oregano oil with olive oil and put it on your nose and cheek area to help in opening the nasal passages. When it comes to using any oil supplements make sure not to use too much. If you choose to take the oil by mouth, start off using just one drop then work your way up. This is because it is strong and can hurt your stomach.

Side Effects of Oregano Oil

It is important to note that oil of oregano has a couple side effects. If it is used incorrectly it can be toxic to your body that is why you take such small doses. That is also why you mix it with olive oil before applying to your skin. Second, it can reduce your body’s ability in storing iron. If you find yourself using oil of oregano regularly, you should consider taking an iron supplement. If you are pregnant, it is not recommended that you take oil of oregano because of this. Lastly, like anything else, some people may have an allergic reaction to the oregano. If you are known for having allergies to things such as mint, basil, thyme, or sage, then oil of oregano may not be ideal for you.

If you have tried oil of oregano to help cure your sinus infection we would love for you to share your experiences. Since there are no published studies, we can only make judgments based on others accounts with this all natural supplement. Feel free to also share your questions or concerns in regards to sinus infections and oregano oils.
