Few things are as simple as making a cup of tea, and researchers highlighted in the Science Daily article African Tea Offers Promising Treatment for Type 2 Diabetes give the public another reason to adopt this simple task into daily routines. Research suggests that the tea can help people who have the condition to tolerate glucose better after drinking it for four months.

Sugar Levels
It is interesting that the African tea does not have an immediate effect on blood sugar levels, as many medicines designed to treat type 2 diabetes do. The increase in tolerance happens over time, with daily intake. The progressive nature of the improvement helps to put focus on the tea as a regulating agent rather than a medicine in the traditional sense.
Fat Factor
The tea also has an effect on polyunsaturated fats in the people tested for the research project. When cells in the body have a high number of these fats, they absorb glucose more effectively. The body is better able to process sugar when the cells contain this healthy fat.
The researchers who made the fat and sugar discoveries completed the study University of Copenhagen Department of Medicinal Chemistry. Per Mølgaard and Joan Campbell-Tofte have interest in exploring traditional medicine.

Traditional Nigerian medicine uses African tea, which is made from the Rauvolfia Vomitoria leaves and aurantium citrus extract, making it the ideal inspiration for Per Mølgaard’s research. Per is particularly interested in Pharmacognosy, a research division that focuses on plants and other natural elements as medicine.
Joan Campbell-Toft and Per Mølgaard have worked together on many research projects that involve various topics including:
• Malian plants used to treat epilepsy
• Guercetin from Calluna vulgaris as a MAO-A inhibitor
• Boophone disticha as a transporter of serotonin
• Depression and South African traditional medicine
Traditional Healing
Using African tea as a remedy for type 2 diabetes is a prime example of the possible effectiveness of using natural approaches to treating healthy conditions. Pharmacognosy is a fascinating topic that can yield surprising results for the medical community. Researchers already know the benefits of using some types of teas for various conditions and the tea from Nigeria is just one of many promising natural remedies.
African Teas
The challenge patients face is finding the right African tea for type 2 diabetes. People commonly refer to a drink that is created using leaves as a “tea”, making the designation for the concoction created by the Rauvolfia Vomitoria leaves and the Citrus aurantium appropriate.
People commonly refer to beverages made from infusing water with leaves as “tea”, but finding the specific blend used in the studies is a little challenging. The site African Tea offers a list of tea-producing countries on the African continent. Nigeria is not on the list.
Type 2 Diabetes Treatment
It is important to note that the tea is not supposed to replace medical interventions determined by a medical doctor. The African tea does not treat all of the symptoms of type 2 diabetes, and similar effects may be achieved with regular exercise. The drink serves as a supplement to treatment approaches deemed necessary by a physician.
