This diet is more popular today than it was when it was first introduced to North America.  Mostly due to the discovery by scientists and doctors that there are benefits of unprocessed foods and whole grains in the diet.

What is Macrobiotics?

Macrobiotics is based on modern and ancient wisdom and practice. It is not only a way of eating; it is a way of life.  Those that live the macrobiotic lifestyle believe that the world’s most powerful medicine is the food we put in our body.  They believe that if we eat unprocessed, whole foods our bodies are healthier and we live longer.

The complex philosophy of the macrobiotic diet is designed around the concepts of yin and yang.  It is believed that if yin and yang are not balanced the body suffers and becomes unhealthy.  The common combination that is said to keep yin and yang in balance is 30% whole grains, 10% beans and legumes, 40% vegetables and the rest are gently processed foods such as beverages, seafood, fish and seasonings.

Macrobiotic diet concerns itself with the season of the year that certain meals are consumed.  Foods should be eaten in seasons in which they are grown.  Light meals are prepared and eaten in summer and spring and for fall and winter more hearty meals are consumed.

Advantages of Macrobiotics

  • Many health professionals and scientists agree that the principles of the diet are sound and they recommend eating whole fresh foods which the diet follows.
  • The principles and diet rules are healthy and balanced
  • This diet is low in saturated fats
  • Macrobiotic diet is low in processed foods and red meat, both are said to be harmful to long term health.
  • Developed in Japan, the Japanese have followed this diet for many centuries and they are among the highest numbers of long living populations.

Disadvantages of Macrobiotics

  • It is complicated and requires much studying and training to understand rationale of food choices and keeping food choices in balance.
  • Those who are new to the diet are often confused due to lack of understanding and training.
  • Certain foods are avoided in the macrobiotic diet such as those from the nightshade family like peppers, tomatoes, eggplants and potatoes which are staples for many people.
  • Removing some foods that are to be avoided can cause the body to lack required nutrients and you must discover new ways to get them, such as vitamins and supplements. 
  • The diet takes understanding and careful planning to make sure your body gets all the nutrients and minerals it needs.
