Waxing

Waxing is becoming more and more popular, and with good reason. Wax is used to remove hair from the body. This wax can be applied to the legs, underarms, bikini area, the eyebrows, chest hair, hair on the back, and even to facial hair. Waxing is popular among men and women.

Health and Beauty Benefits of Waxing

While most people use wax to remove body hair for beauty purposes, there are also many health benefits associated with this practice as well. You will have fewer instances of ingrown hairs, you won’t risk nicks from sharp razors, and there will be less body hair to trap bacteria.

The beauty benefits, of course, are that you will have nice smooth – hairless – skin. Because the wax also removes dead skin cells along with hair, you will find that your skin is extremely smooth and in good health as well.

The Difference between Hot and Cold Wax

When you purchase wax, you may see a choice between hot wax and cold wax. One is not necessarily better than the other. It’s really just a matter of personal preference. Hot wax will need to be heated to a certain temperature, while cold wax strips can be immediately applied. It isn’t true that one causes less pain than the other either. Either way, the hairs are adhered to the wax, and the strip is then quickly ripped away, taking the hair with it. This causes some level of temporary pain.

Professional Waxing or DIY

There are many professionals who are licensed for hair removal, but this is something that you can do at home as well. Typically, people who have a hard time dealing with the momentary pain associated with hair removal will use a professional. Professionals are also commonly used for hair removal in hard to reach areas of the body. The hair removal done by a professional, for the most part, won’t be any better than the hair removal that you do yourself at home.

The Dangers of Waxing

For the most part, there are no dangers associated with waxing. However, some people find that they have minor irritation after the procedure – either because of a mild allergy to the wax, or to skin that is irritated from the hair removal process. This irritation is usually very temporary, and can be soothed with lotion in most cases.

Additionally, you should avoid this type of hair removal if you are using Retin-A, Accutane, or similar products on the area where the hair will be removed. You should also avoid this procedure if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or varicose veins, and in areas where warts, moles, pimples, or other skin irritations or problems exist.
