Phenolics

Phenolics is the term that refers to the study of chemicals known as phenols. This field of scientific research studies these chemicals, with phenol health studies examining the various ways in which naturally occurring phenols influence different actions in the human body. Through an increased understanding of the action of phenols, scientist hope to make positive steps forward in the application and use of phenol treatments to improve health.

Understanding Phenolics

Studying phenols can provide scientists with an understanding of the way that these chemicals can affect our moods, influence processes in the body and initiate hormonal responses under a range of different conditions. The research of phenols is generally not restricted to the study of hormones and chemical interaction in the human body, however this is the key application of this science in health. The study of these chemical compounds can also extend to include research into the phenols found in red wine, various fruits and vegetables and in other natural substances.

Phenols in the Human Body

Within the human body, the most common forms of phenols are those found in hormones. The chemical interaction that takes place to initiate hormone driven responses in the body is one key aspect of the study of phenolics. By studying the way in which these hormones work and how they affect the body, there is the potential for scientists to uncover new treatments and improve health for people suffering a number of hormone imbalances and related conditions.
Some common phenols that you may have heard of are the following:
• Estradiol oestrogen – a female reproductive hormone
• Serotonin – a neurotransmitter that regulates the gut and also influences moods and natural biorhythms
• Dopamine – a muscular stimulant that is closely connected with the role of adrenaline
• Adrenaline – a hormone that stimulates fast action and response to injury or stress
• Noradrenaline – natural neurotransmitters that facilitate the movement of muscles

The Benefits of Phenolics

Through the understanding of the different phenols in the body, there is the potential to apply this understanding to the treatment of different medical conditions that arise when an imbalance of phenols occurs. One example of the way in which researchers have applied the knowledge of phenols to improving health is the phenolics research that has been carried out on dopamine and patients with Parkinson disease.

Scientists believe that decreased levels of dopamine in the brain can be an underlying cause of Parkinson disease. Phenolics researchers have found that oral doses of dopa will cross the blood-brain barrier and be converted into dopamine. This then provides the brain with an increased level of dopamine, helping to alleviate the problems of uncontrolled movement associated with Parkinson disease.

Phenolics and research into how phenols interact with the body has the potential to provide natural solutions to a range of medical conditions. Through the scientific application of phenolics, people suffering imbalances in phenols will be afforded relief from a range of medical conditions; as demonstrated in the treatment of Parkinson Disease.
