Nutrition refers primarily to the food we eat. Our bodies need energy to fuel the many processes that must be carried out to sustain us, and nutrition refers to the food source of the minerals and nutrients that are used during those processes. There are many highly nutritious foods available that provide our bodies with everything needed and when we understand and fuel our bodies with highly nutritious food we will feel better and be in better shape.

You’ve probably already got some general idea of what nutrition is, but now is a good time to look a bit closer. Nutrition refers specifically to the food that we take in when we eat meals each day. A highly nutritious diet is one that provides your body with all the essential vitamins and minerals needed. Good nutrition is important during childhood to ensure that growth and development progress as they ought to, helping the child to grow strong and healthy. As adults, good nutrition helps our bodies remain strong, it gives us energy to work and provides us with the ‘resources’ we need to fight off illness or injury.

Why is it important?

Good nutrition is important because it helps our bodies to stay strong, fit and healthy. When an individual is well nourished and has been following a diet that is rich in highly nutritious food, they are better able to fight disease, stay mentally alert and keep fit. If you do fall ill, having adequate nutrition will mean that your body is able to fight infections or carry out any ‘repairs’ if you are injured. Poor nutrition, lack of nutrition and over eating can lead to illness, poor growth and development and obesity.

Understanding good nutrition

There are several basics that are easy to get a hang of when you are aiming to eat a nutritious and healthy diet. Experts advise eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, balancing that with some cereal based products and including a good mix of legumes and some dairy. If you eat meat, you are advised to eat one small portion per day, if not, it is advisable to supplement your diet with other foods that are rich in iron and protein, such nuts, legumes and mushrooms. A good way of remembering how to follow a healthy diet is to follow the Food Pyramid. This is a good way of keeping track of how much food you should ideally eat from the different food groups each day.
Five tips for good nutrition from the food pyramid:
• Eat 3-5 servings of vegetables in a day
• Have 2-4 servings of fruit in a day
• Stick to 3 cups of dairy products
• Eat 56-74 grams (2-3 ounces) of meat or meat alternatives every day
• Keep oils to a minimum and try to use alternatives like olive oil

The benefits of good nutrition

A highly nutritious diet is important in children to ensure strong muscular and bone growth. The foods that we eat are the building blocks of growth and development, which means that good nutrition plays an important role in helping children to grow strong and healthy. As an adult, the foods we eat play a slightly different, but no less important role. In our mature years, the quality of food we eat, combined with exercise and a healthy lifestyle, will have an impact upon weight, help prevent certain types of cancers, prevent the onset of osteoporosis and prevent Type 2 Diabetes.
Good nutrition is undoubtedly one of the most important steps that people can take to ensure that they stay strong and healthy and in good shape. Healthy eating is essential if you wish to get the nutrition you need to achieve this. With a little knowhow, you can improve your well-being through a well-balanced diet and good nutrition.
