The field of vegetarianism is growing, and vegetarian cooks and chefs are needed. Being a vegetarian cook is more than just cooking without the use of meat. There is a great deal of skill and knowledge that has to be used to make food truly vegetarian.
Vegetarian cooks and chefs are hired to work in restaurants, hospitals, spas, nursing homes, and a variety of other venues. Vegetarians have special nutritional needs due to the nutritional needs that are not being met with the consumption of meat. A vegetarian cook or chef must know how to plan and prepare meals that still provide all of the minerals, vitamins, and nutrients that are needed by the human body.
You can become a cook without special training, but to get the best jobs with the best benefits, you should consider vegetarian cooking classes and certification. This will enable you to work for larger institutions, which pay more money for your skills. With more education, you can go from an entry level cook position to a food manager position as well. You could also become a head chef, meaning that you will supervise other chefs and cooks where you work.
Becoming a vegetarian cook or chef is a specialization which goes beyond the education needed to become a regular or general chef or cook. Because this is a specialization, you can expect to make more money annually than regular cooks or chefs as well. You should plan to spend at least two to four years in a culinary arts program at a college, trade school, or culinary school, and then proceed with additional education for vegetarian culinary arts. Upon completion of your education, you should seek certification from the American Culinary Federation.
Chefs earn about $50,000 annually, but as a specialized vegetarian chef or cook, you can expect to earn closer to $65,000 or $70,000 annually after you have more experience in this field.
