Toxicology Courses

Toxicology is a growing field, and the more we learn about different medications, toxins, plants, and more, the larger this field will grow. Toxicology is essentially the study of how medicines, foods, plants, and the environment as a whole affect humans, animals, and other living organisms. Toxicology can be practiced on humans, water, air, soil, plants, animals, or food. Toxicology courses and programs are required to enter this field.

Toxicology is also used for products that are not edible, but which may be harmful to living organisms or the environment in their use. Toxicologists are responsible for numerous things, including determining the safe dosages of medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, for humans. They are also responsible for knowing what effects different dosages of medications will have on humans.

Toxicologists also examine toxins that are already present in humans, by examining and studying the results of blood, urine, skin, and hair tests as well as other bodily fluids. This is a very exciting and interesting field. Toxicologists work for private industries, research labs, government agencies, hospitals, universities, and laboratories used for medical testing.

There are essentially three levels of education that should be pursued for a career in toxicology – a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and a PhD. Most toxicologists, however, will hold a master’s degree. Some can enter the field of toxicology, in a low-level position, with an associate’s degree as well. Naturally, however, to enter this field, you will need a strong educational background in biology and other sciences.

Depending on the level of education that has been obtained, toxicologists earn anywhere from $70,000 per year up to $100,000, and those in research fields who hold a PhD can earn up to $200,000 annually. Because healthcare is so important, and the environment has such an impact on health, the field of toxicology is growing in leaps and bounds.
