If you’ve always enjoyed styling your hair, or your friend’s hair, you are probably well suited for a career as a hair stylist. Becoming a hair stylist starts with professional hair stylist courses, and even people who already have cosmetology certificates may seek further knowledge through professional hair stylist courses.

It is important to note that there are many different specializations for those who obtain cosmetology certificates, and hair styling is just one discipline. Regardless of the specialization, you will be required to obtain licensing through your state, by taking and passing the state board examination.
Before you can take that examination, however, you must meet the requirements for sitting for the exam. While these requirements vary from state to state, each state requires a certain number of credit hours of instruction, including classroom work and hands-on training. All of this can be obtained through professional hair stylist courses, and such courses can be participated in through local colleges, trade schools, or beauty schools. Many high school juniors and seniors can participate in cosmetology courses through their local schools as well, where this is offered.
Just under half of all professional hair stylists are self-employed. The rest are employed in a variety of venues, including beauty salons, spas, nursing homes, and for entertainment companies. Where you work will play a huge role in how much you earn. On the high end, you can make up to $30 per hour or more, but this depends on how many clients you can fit in each hour, and the area where you work also makes a vast difference in how much you can earn.
Those who are self employed tend to earn the highest incomes, but also have the greatest expenses, including state requirements for insurance coverage. Most states will not allow you to operate as a professional hair stylist without the proper amount and types of insurance coverage, and most states also will not allow you to sit for the state board exams if you have a criminal record. Make sure that you know, and can meet, your state requirements for licensing and that you are selecting the appropriate hair stylist courses for that licensing as well.
