Midwives provide emotional and physical support during the birth of a child, and many women are opting for a midwife, as opposed to an obstetrician when they give birth these days.
Midwives are not just present for the birth of the child, however. They are present to offer their specialized services before, during and after the birth. While the education for this field can be obtained online, you will also be required to spend a certain number of hours gaining clinical experience as well, for the purpose of state licensing.
Midwives work in private practices – usually in a client’s home, in hospitals, clinics, birthing centers, public health departments, and other venues as well. Registered nurses who study to become midwives will either receive a certificate or a Master’s degree. Aside from any state licensing that may be required you must also take and pass the American College of Nurse Midwives Examination. It is important that you demonstrate that you have knowledge concerning the birthing process, as well as proper nutrition for pregnant women and infants, infant care, and proper exercise during pregnancy.
Because more women – and insurance companies – are opting for midwifery services during childbirth, this field is growing by proverbial leaps and bounds, and the long term employment opportunities are excellent. The amount of income you earn as a midwife, however, will vary depending on the area in which you practice, the organization for which you work, and of course the number of clients that you serve. Most midwives are also knowledgeable concerning different childbirth methods that are available, and will be able to educate women on those available methods.
