Nuclear medicine is becoming extremely important in healthcare as more and more new discoveries are made. This field has growth potential that is faster then average, and is expected to continue to grow as more people age. Despite this growth, job opportunities in this area are limited, and those who have the greatest training in various types of testing equipments and methods will get the jobs that are available. It is important to note that while the job openings are currently limited, they are expected to increase as more technological and nuclear advances are made in the future.
Nuclear medicine technology involves the use of x-ray devices, magnetic resonance imaging, and Sonography equipment for the purpose of medical diagnosis. More commonly, however, in nuclear medicine technology, the professional administers some type of radiopharmaceuticals to the patients in combination with use of the testing equipment. All equipment that is used in this field typically uses radiation in some form, and to some level.
Most nuclear medicine technologists work in hospitals, but a few will work in private practices and smaller clinics, or specialty hospitals. This type of work requires anywhere from one year of study to four years of study, with certificates, associate’s degrees, and bachelors degrees available in this field. Naturally, those who hold bachelor’s degrees will have the greatest job opportunities, and the highest salaries. Most states and hospitals will require certification, in addition to education for this type of work.
The annual salary that you can expect as a nuclear medicine technologist depends mostly on the amount of education that you have had, but can also be dependent on the demand for this type of work in your area. Those who live in major metropolitan areas will have the greatest opportunities for employment, advancement, and higher salaries in this field. Entry level nuclear medicine technologists can expect to make just over $40,000 annually, while those with more education can make up to about $80,000 annually.
