An LPN is a Licensed Practical Nurse. An LVN or Licensed Vocational Nurse is the same thing. The title for the same education and work differs from state to state. It takes one year of school or training to become an LPN, and while continuing education credits are required for the licensing in this profession, and those continuing education credits are available online, becoming an LPN requires attendance in a traditional classroom setting, as well as clinical experience which cannot be obtained online.
The need for LPN’s has been growing exponentially for a couple of decades, and that growth still continues today. In fact, the growth is expected to continue for at least another decade, as there is still a shortage of nurses. LPN’s find work in a wide range of settings, including doctor’s offices, nursing homes, hospitals, clinics, schools, and private corporations. One area of nursing that is very popular and in high demand is home health care. Many nurses will specialize and become surgical nurses, pediatric nurses, obstetrical nurses, and more. These specializations do not typically require certification, but do require training.
The number of spots available in the many nursing schools around the country is limited, and admittance requires scoring high on a test in most cases. Those who score the highest on the test for that school will gain those open spots in the program. At the end of the program, you must sit for the National Council Licensure Examination or a state board exam, or both. Sitting for the exam requires a certain number of hours of classroom study and clinical hours, which varies from state to state.
The salary that you earn as an LPN will be dependent on the need for nurses in your area, and the cost of living in your area as well, since many doctors and hospitals set their own rates by that standard. LPN’s earn approximately $40,000 per year, and many will go on to become Registered Nurses for a higher salary.
