The air we breathe, the food that the earth produces, the natural disasters that we are experiencing more frequently, and so much more that is environmentally connected have become a great source of concern for people around the world. This is why the field of environmental health is growing, and why many are considering environmental health training and education.
The federal government in the United States has pledged billions of dollars to this field for several years now, and those dollars are rising in spite of the failure of the economy simply based on its importance to all human life. This is where environmental health specialists come into play. These professionals are extremely important to our survival, and the demand for these professionals will continue to grow.
There are many different career opportunities in the field of environmental health. These professionals may specialize in air quality, radiation protection, solid waste management, food protection and safety, the management of hazardous waste, the quality of housing, regulation of refineries and pollution, water quality, and more.
These professionals can work either in the private sector or for the government. Choices for employment and careers in the federal government include the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), which also includes the Center for Disease Control, or CDC, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), or the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).
The salary, career advancement opportunities, and the work environment will be dependent on the specialization that you choose, as well as the company or government organization that you choose to work in once you have completed your environmental health training and education. This education can take anywhere from two to eight years, depending on the specific area of the field that you are entering, but ideally, you will earn at the very least a bachelor’s degree, and preferably a master’s degree in environmental health.
