There are many different types of dentists. These include pediatric dentists, periodontists, endodontists, and orthodontists. These are in addition to those who practice general dentistry. While each type of dentist does different things, they all have one thing in common. They all need dental assistants, and you can become a dental assistant by taking dentistry courses online.

A dental assistant is not to be confused with dental hygienists, although they do perform many of the same duties. The dental assistant works with the dentist, or with the hygienist, however. The dental assistant hands the dentist instruments, prepares the examination room, runs errands around the office for the dentist, and may even perform laboratory tests at the dentist’s direction. Administration duties may also be a part of the job, depending on what the dentist requires.
Additionally, a dental assistant may schedule appointments, provide patients with the dentist’s instructions, answer questions for the dentist over the phone, and keep patient records and files updated. Dental assistants need to know information about preventative dentistry, oral nutrition health, dental terminology, oral anatomy, pathology, radiology, pharmacology, and more. A good dental assistant program will cover everything that you need to know in order to be successful in the field.
Dental assistance can be learned in an online environment, making it very easy to receive the education that is needed for this field. Once you’ve completed your education, you can work in a dental office or clinic, or for a variety of state or government agencies. The demand for dental assistants is expected to increase through 2016, and beyond. Most states do have licensing requirements for dental assistants, but your education should prepare you for this exam. The education required can take as little as six months, and you can expect to earn $30,000 or more per year in an entry level position.
