Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, is becoming popular all over the world, and it is the most commonly used form of medical treatment in China. In fact, it is believed that TCM is as old as China. If you are considering becoming a Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner, there are many things that you need to be aware of. Becoming a Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner takes more than just taking a Chinese Medicine Course.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner uses herbal remedies and acupuncture, as well as cupping, massage, mind-body therapy, food therapy, and moxibustion among other natural remedies to treat patients. With this said, however, a responsible TCM Practitioner is skilled enough to know when a client also needs traditional Western medicine, and will refer that client to a physician for treatment as well.

More than training is required to become a TCM Practitioner. You must also obtain the proper licensing. In the United States, you will need to attend an accredited school for Traditional Chinese Medicine, and some states also require that the school be accredited by ACAOM. All states that require licensing will also require that you have taken and passed the exams issued by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine as well.

Upon completion of your education, and after obtaining the appropriate licensing for your state, you can choose to become a member on staff at an existing practice, or to start your own private practice. The amount of income that you get from your new career will vary, and is determined by many factors, which include how many patients you see each day, how big the demand is for TCM in your area, the economic conditions in your area, and more. Most TCM practitioners in established practices, however, report that they are making six figure incomes annually.

It is also important to note that becoming a good TCM practitioner is not a fast process. You will be attending school for at least five years in most cases – there are no shortcuts on this particular career path, but if helping people with Traditional Chinese Medicine is your main goal, the length of time that it takes to get from where you are, to where you want to be, is usually well worth the effort.
