If you want to be a heart surgeon, you need to attend school for many years. However, if you don’t have such aspirations, but you are still interested in healthcare that centers on the human heart, you might consider becoming a cardiology technologist. This can be achieved with cardiology courses.
These skilled professionals work in a variety of venues, including cardiac rehabilitation clinics, hospitals, doctor’s offices, laboratories, and more. While they are not doctors, they do assist doctors in treating heart patients, and this is typically done for what are considered invasive procedures. While the cardiology technologist does not do the actual procedure, they do prepare the patient for the procedures. It is also the technologist’s job to monitor the patient’s vital signs during procedures.
Cardiology technologists do not just perform duties immediately before and during invasive procedures. They are also a vital part in certain testing for the heart, such as when electrocardiograms, known as EKGs, are performed. Many of the larger hospitals have programs that will train you to become a cardiology technician, even if you do not have a college education, although a high school diploma will be required. In these instances, it takes only eight to sixteen weeks to complete the training.
The best way to break into this field, however, is to at least obtain an associate’s degree, with the understanding that this not only increases the chances of getting the job over other applicants, but also commands a higher salary in most cases. Technical schools and community colleges offer the program that is necessary to obtain this type of employment. Upon completion of your training, you will need to be certified by the American Cardiology Technologists Association.
While many cardiology technologists work during the day, only on weekdays, those who elect to work in hospitals may be on call on weekends and nights as well.
