If you are expecting a baby, and you plan to breastfeed, you should be aware that it may not come as naturally for you as you had hoped. You need breastfeeding instructions so that you know exactly how it is done, and how to deal with problems that arise. This is all learned in breastfeeding classes.
The first thing that you want to be absolutely sure of is that the instructor is qualified to teach you the proper methods for breastfeeding. Typically, he or she should be certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultants, or IBCLC. He or she should also be a Certified Lactation Counselor, or CLC. You may even prefer an instructor who has actually breast fed her own children.
It isn’t always easy to find a class that is entirely specific and focused on breastfeeding. You may have to find a class that is a mixture of child rearing topics, such as child birthing classes or parenting classes for newborns. Regardless, the class should teach you how to breastfeed, how the process works, latching procedures, how to get a good milk supply, breast pumping, breastfeeding positions, how to know if the baby is getting enough nourishment, and how to deal with breastfeeding problems that may arise. Ideally, you will also have the opportunity to see a woman breastfeeding a baby in person.
Additionally, you need to make sure that you are not on your own once the class has ended. Make sure that the class offers follow-up help if it is needed. Is there a number that you can call to talk to someone about issues that you are having, which were not covered in the class? Each baby and each mother is unique, and while a class can teach you the basics, and teach you how to deal with common problems, unique problems may occur that were not covered at all.
