Acupuncture Training

In 1993, according to the Food and Drug Administration, more than $500,000 was spent on acupuncture treatments – and that was about seventeen years ago. Today, millions are spent each year for those treatments. Acupuncture is a form of Chinese Medicine that has been practiced for many centuries, and it has been proven – scientifically – to be an effective remedy for a number of health issues.

Of course, not everyone is suited to become an acupuncturist. You must have a belief in Traditional Chinese Medicine, but you do not have to be Chinese. Acupuncture is about restoring the natural flow of the qi through pathways known as meridians, using approximately 2000 different pressure points in the body. In this way, acupuncture is used to treat a number of ailments, and the National Institute of Health does recognize acupuncture as a viable treatment option for things such as headaches, body aches and pains, asthma, back pain, addictions, and many other issues.

As an acupuncturist, you can work in a private practice, or as a member of a medical team, such as in a Chiropractors office. Most states do have licensing requirements, requiring you to train in an approved program for anywhere from three to five years. You must then pass a state board exam for licensing purposes, at which time you will be accredited. If you become certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, you will hold the title of Dipl.Ac, or Diplomat of Acupuncture.

If you open your own practice as an acupuncturist, you can expect to earn approximately $45,000 to $50,000 in your first year, and you will most likely double, or even triple that in a few years time, depending on the number of acupuncturists in your area, and the demand for the service. Overall, this is a great career path, but again, you must have an interest in natural healing techniques – especially in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
