The field of occupational therapy is growing, and expected to continue growing at least through 2012. This field is highly regulated in the United States, and licensing is required, which makes it very important to find schools that are accredited occupational therapy schools. If the school that you attend isn’t accredited, you cannot sit for the exam required for licensing.

If you did not receive a bachelor’s degree for occupational therapy before 2007, you will have to get a Master’s degree in occupational therapy to become a licensed occupational therapist. Otherwise, the best that you can hope for is to become an occupational therapists assistant, which only requires an associate’s degree.
Occupational therapists work in a wide variety of settings, including hospitals, doctors offices, schools, corporations, and more. Their main goal is to help patients adapt to or recover from disabilities, so that the patient can continue to function in day-to-day life – whether they are at home, at work, or out in the general public.
Not everyone is cut out for this field. It takes skill, patience, and true compassion for other human beings to be a successful occupational therapist. Again, it is vital that you find accredited occupational therapy schools that offer master’s programs. Even those individuals who are practicing licensed occupational therapists, with bachelor’s degrees, can benefit by furthering their education and obtaining a master’s degree in this field of study.
Also note that many of these schools will have certain requirements for acceptance, such as a specific GPA range, which generally is at least 2.5 or higher. These programs usually take about a year and a half to complete, and some are available online, while others are not. Some of the online programs will require you to attend campus classes on occasion as well, and before signing up for an online program, you need to be aware of this requirement.
