Types of Exercise and Fitness Programs

There are many types of exercise and fitness programs and activities that one can incorporate into their lifestyle. It is important to incorporate some type of exercise to your daily routine. It is best if you can make it part of your everyday lifestyle so you will be more likely to get it done.

Aerobics : This is an aerobic cardiovascular exercise that increases heart rate and is used most often to lose weight . It can be done at various levels. It usually incorporates music with dance like moves. An example is aerobic videos like “Sweating to the Oldies”.

Walking : This is also an aerobic cardiovascular exercise. It is less intense than aerobics and is also used to lose weight as well as maintain a healthy weight. It is suggested to walk at least 30 minutes a day. Power walking is a version that uses more energy and burns more calories.

Swimming : Also an aerobic cardio vascular exercise. It uses multiple muscle groups and is an excellent choice for those with compromised joints and who suffer from obesity because it creates less strain on joints.

Running : An aerobic exercise that increases heart rate and is very intense. It is a common exercise of athletes. It is more difficult on the joints and not suggested for beginners. This is a great cardiovascular exercise.

Cycling : Another cardiovascular aerobic exercise that increases heart rate. It can be more gentle on the joints or done intensely through mountain biking. This is an exercise that can be done outdoors or indoors on a stationary bike. Bike riding or cycling will help burn calories and encourages weight loss.

Weight Lifting : This is a muscle building exercise. It is used to tone the muscles of the body. Each area can be worked independently. This uses weight and resistance training to strengthen the body.

Yoga : Yoga strengthens the mind and the body. It is a type of exercise used to connect the mind with the body and the body with the soul. It concentrates energy to a single muscle for strengthening and the mind becomes clear and more focused as it concentrates on that muscle. The use of proper breathing techniques is also incorporated to make it a spiritual workout as well.

Pilates : This is not a aerobic exercise although in a unfit person it can increase heart rate. Pilates is more like weight lifting than aerobics or cardio exercises. It uses resistance to strengthen the muscles and align the spine. Unlike weightlifting it will not bulk up the muscles but rather strengthen and tone. It also concentrates on flexibility, mind and spirit. This workout incorporates different apparatus which is done with the supervision of a trained professional instructor.

Martial Arts : This is an exercise and a great discipline all in one. It can teach self defense at the same time improving fitness. There are several forms of martial arts including different forms of karate and Tai Chi. There are many forms of martial arts. Some of the steps or moves are interchangeable while others are distinct to the type of martial arts being practiced.

There are many benefits to incorporating exercise and fitness into one’s life. It not only improves physical health but also prevents diseases like diabetes and even some forms of cancer. It can relieve stress and create a healthy happy person. It provides the ability to lose weight as well as maintain a healthy body weight. Exercise and fitness also has a direct link to mental health as well. The more physically fit one’s body is the more mentally fit they are as well. The practice of exercise increases self esteem and mental sharpness.

When beginning a new workout routine it is important to consult medical advice to the ability of what you are about to do. It may not be suggested for you to rush into a difficult routine until your body has been properly conditioned.
