What is the Glycemic Index?

The glycemic index measures foods on a scale that takes into account the amount of good and bad carbohydrates that the food contains. The glycemic index is often used with patients who want to lose weight, as well as those that need to measure their blood sugar levels. The higher the food is on the glycemic index, the worse the effect will be on weight loss and diabetes control. Most of these foods include those high in sugar, carbohydrates, and starches.
