cancer Cancer

Cancer is the term used for a group of diseases characterized by abnormal cell activity. The cells may show signs of uncontrolled growth, invasion or metastasis. These three traits are what differentiate cancers from benign tumors and even though several forms of cancer may develop tumors from symptoms, these tumors are not benign.

With more than 200 total types of cancer, the causes can vary widely. The most common causes of cancer are carcinogens, age, genetic makeup, immune system dysfunction, diet, environment, and viruses. Determining the causative factor for the cancer can also help the doctor and patient decide the best path for treatment and will often create differing symptoms.

Stages of Cancer

Cancer is usually described in stages. Stage 1 refers to a beginning cancer that is still very small and most often contained within the organ or area in which it started. Stage 2 refers to a cancer that has grown to larger than stage 1, but remains localized to the organ or area in which it started. Stage 3 describes a cancer that has grown beyond stage 2 with cancer cells present in the lymph nodes of the area. Stage 4 is reserved for cancers that have grown and spread to areas other than the beginning area of the body.

Medicinal Treatments

When cancer is first diagnosed, the doctor involved in the case will immediately begin talking about a course of treatment. For some smaller cancers surgery is chosen to remove the cancer from the body. After the surgery, chemotherapy and / or radiation therapy will be used to keep the cancer cells from growing in the same area of the body or in another area.

Alternative Treatments for Cancer

More and more cancer survivors are turning to alternative therapies for treatment. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are extremely harsh on the body and can leave the patient with immediate side effects and long term health issues even after the cancer is removed from the body.
