Your skin is a major organ on your body and it protects the rest of you from exposure to your environment, so it’s important to take care of it. We have learned so much recently about giving the skin what it needs to repair itself. There’s no need for expensive and dangerous surgery if you take care of your skin from an early age.
Acne and Skin Care
Acne is a condition of the skin that causes eruptions, blemishes, and can cause serious scarring if not treated. For years topical prescription ointments have been used to dry out the skin and the acne. But this has shown to cause the skin to react with over production of oil, causing more skin imbalances.
The best way to deal with acne is by eating right, which means no excess sugar or fats, exercise to allow the skin to sweat and clean itself out, and washing the skin gently with a good natural facial cleanser such as one containing tea tree oil. You can also add a mild amount of benzoyl peroxide to restore a natural balance of oils in the skin.
Preventing Wrinkles
The first two suggestions for preventing wrinkles are non invasive and are the biggest causes of premature wrinkling – stop smoking and don’t tan in the sun. Sun can make you look gorgeous when you’re young, but as you age you will look prematurely old because the collagen in the skin breaks down with sun exposure. This means the skin does not maintain its elasticity and wrinkles appear.
Alpha-hydroxy acid skin creams can help too in your fight against wrinkles. They act as exfolliants sloughing off dead skin cells and moisturizing the new skin that lies beneath. But, even better than that, are antioxidants. Vitamins A, E, and C are naturally occurring antioxidants and prevent free radical damage and premature aging.
Preventing Sun Damage on Your Skin
Since sun damage is the number one cause of skin issues and premature aging of the skin, excessive sun exposure should be avoided. You can use a good sun block with an SPF or 30 or higher for complete coverage. Sun block usually only protects against UVB rays, when UVA rays are quite harmful as well. You’ll need to look for a sun block that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. These are non chemical preventers of the harmful effects of UVA sunlight.
Don’t think that a sun hat and a large pair of sunglasses will do the trick. Sun seems to find you no matter how you hide so make sure you are protected. Women, if you are wearing makeup and don’t want to add sun block over your makeup, be sure to find makeup that contains an SPF level of 15 or higher already in it. And, always remember that even if you don’t feel hot, or see your skin turning red, you may still be exposed to harmful rays of sunlight. Get the proper protection for you. People with darker skin tones still need sun block. Even if you never burn, the sun will age you faster than normal and wrinkles will appear sooner than you want.
