Most pregnancies are carried out without significant complications. However, you should be aware of all the complications that can arise during the 9 months of pregnancy, that can be dangerous to both mother and baby.
1. Miscarriage
Miscarriage means pregnancy loss in 20 weeks. Unfortunately, between 15 and 20% of the known pregnancies end up in miscarriage, and more than 80% of these losses occur within the first 12 weeks.
From this point of view, most miscarriages occurring in the first trimester are considered to be direct consequences of chromosomal abnormalities in the fertilized egg, which prevents the embryo to develop further.
The first symptom of miscarriage is vaginal discharge of blood, so if you see any weird leakage it is essential to get in touch with your doctor in the shortest time. Only he can make the difference between a miscarriage or a simple leak that appears from time to time during pregnancy.
2. Labor And Premature Birth
If you start to have regular contractions that cause an opening (dilation) or a thinning of the cervix before pregnancy reaches 37 weeks , then it means you’re having a labor and a premature birth. Also, when a child is born before 37 weeks, it is said that it’s born premature.
3. Amniotic Fluid Deficit
The amniotic sac should normally be filled with fluid to protect and support the development of the fetus. When there is a deficiency of amniotic fluid (state called oligohydramnios) the child development may be jeopardized and the doctor will closely monitor how the pregnancy evolves. Moreover, if this deadline is approaching 37 weeks and the situation is sufficiently serious, the doctor may decide to induce pregnancy so the life of the fetus isn’t endangered .
4. Pre-eclamsia
Preeclampsia is a complex disorder that affects between 3 and 8% of pregnant women. The condition is found among women who have passed the 20th week of pregnancy and the diagnosis is made when they meet two conditions simultaneously: they start to have a high blood pressure and, at the same time, tests reveal the presence of protein in urine.
Most women who get sick contract a mild form of preeclampsia, somewhere near the date on which the birth takes place, so both they and their children will be safe if they get proper treatment. On the other hand, severe forms of preeclampsia can affect many organs and can cause problems serious enough to endanger both the mother’s life and that of children; usually those cases need immediate medical treatment , and the doctors choose to induce labor and birth.
5. Gestational Diabetes
About 5% of pregnant women in the United States develop this type of diabetes. It may not seem too much but in reality it’s quite a few people and the affection itself is not an easy one. Thus, future mothers diagnosed with gestational diabetes will be closely monitored by doctors and they will be prescribed a treatment and a diet to control their blood sugar levels.
6. Ectopic pregnancy
When a fertilized egg is fixed anywhere else than the uterus, this is called an ectopic pregnancy. Thus, the egg is set in one of the fallopian tubes, one of the ovaries, cervix, stomach. Unfortunately there is no way to remove an ectopic pregnancy (ectopic) and bring it into the uterus so its completion is the only possible solution. It is estimated that the rate of occurrence of ectopic pregnancies is one in 50 normal pregnancies.
7. Placenta Previa
If you have such a condition, it means that your placenta is situated unusually low in the uterus, in the cervix area. This situation is met in about 1 in 200 cases. Placenta previa does not appear in the early stages of pregnancy, but in the next phases; previa can cause bleeding that will require an induced premature birth.
