Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints. Arthritis is basically of two types –osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In osteoarthritis, bones increase in size and the space in between decreases, as a result the bones start rubbing against each other causing pain. Arthritis pain control is more about regulation and modification of lifestyle. Thus, it can be managed with a modified lifestyle and proper medication. Human body is like a machine in which joints play very important role in proper functioning of it. If not used properly, it may get spoilt or rusted. So flexibility of the joints and strength of the muscles supporting it are very important.
1. Exercise
Exercise will make your joints flexible. Initially moving your joints may be painful but don’t avoid it due to pain or fatigue. Regular exercise strengthens muscles and reduces pain as well. Weight bearing exercises like walking will prove helpful to strengthen the muscles too. Try not to keep your joints in same position for a long period of time. Keep your joints moving on and off. Take breaks from continuous writing and if you feel fatigue, stretch your fingers, fold and unfold the fingers. While watching television, try doing knitting work; on long drives take breaks; stretch your back, neck, and move from your place, stand or walk for a while and then restart your work. Don’t overwork your joints, organize your work and do periodic relaxation and stretches.
2. Cold and Heat Therapy
Pain in the joints is due to inflammation. A number of sufferers will get relief with cold therapy whereas few will get rid of their pain with hot therapy. These therapies will help to relax the muscles and reduce pain.

3. Proper Posture
While sitting, make sure that your lower back is supported. It’s easy to get into and out of the chair with high seats than regular chairs. Moreover, adjustable foot rest is a better choice for patients with arthritis. Make frequent posture changes if you have to be continuously in a sitting position. For bathing, make a firm, low stool to sit and take a bath.
4. Diet
Pure vegetarian diet is the best for arthritic patients. Red meat, dairy products like cheese, butter, and foodstuff with high cholesterol are advised to avoid for arthritic patients. Citrus food like lemon or orange should be completely avoided. Food containing polyunsaturated oil like omega-3 fatty acids lavishly present in walnuts, soybeans, and fish are essential for reduction of pain due to arthritis. Sugar alters the immune system and it’s advised to avoid sugar intake for people with arthritis pain.
5. Massage & Medications
Massage therapy increases the blood flow towards the area and improves flexibility of the joints. It reduces the inflammation of the joint and relaxes muscles. Endorphins are natural pain killers which can be released after a good massage therapy. Thus massage therapy helps to relax muscles and pain due to arthritis will come down as well. Furthermore, good pain killers like No steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs [NSAIDs] and corticosteroid can help to give the sufferer symptomatic relief from the pain. What’s more, several lotions and ointments when on rubbed on the affected area, are effectual for arthritic pain relief.
