There are many traditions and customs among the Chinese. Surprisingly, many of these traditions actually promote and preserve good health a great deal. Because of this, many people are now turning to those old traditions around the world in hopes of better health. For this, you need to know the 5 most healthy yum cha dishes.

Where Does Yum Cha Come From?
Yum Cha is a term that simply means tea tasting or to drink tea. Yum Cha itself is not an actual food, but an action. However, Yum Cha isn’t just about drinking tea – it’s also about eating dim sum dishes. Dim Sum requires the individual to eat small portions of certain foods, and these foods are most often steamed foods that are actually served directly from the steamer basket, or placed on a very small plate.
Yum Cha is a Cantonese word, and when used in this tongue, it refers to the whole dining experience that includes dim sum and tea. The Yum Cha custom has been traced back as far as the Qing Dynasty, but nobody really knows when the custom originated prior to that time.
The 5 Most Healthy Yum Cha Recipes
For the dim sum portion of yum cha, you can try the following dishes, served with Chinese tea.
- Steamed Shrimp Dumplings wrapped in rice flour pastry. In Cantonese or Chinese, these are known as Har Gao.
- Deep Fried Egg Rolls.
- Pork Roast with Steamed Buns. This is known as Char Siu Bao.
- Yam Croquettes. These can be filled with a variety of things, including mushrooms, shrimp, or pork. This is known as Woo Kok.
- Turnip Cake. Turnip Cake is actually quite tasty, and is known as Lor Bak Ko.
Is There Any Danger Associated with Yum Cha?
Overall, there really are no dangers associated with the Yum Cha tradition, and in fact, the tradition will do you more good than harm. Yum Cha is actually considered to be a small snack, as opposed to a full meal, and spices such as garlic and ginger are used heavily in these dishes because of the health benefits of those spices.
The only real danger comes from eating in ‘dirty’ Chinese restaurants. This isn’t to say that all Chinese restaurants are ‘dirty.’ Instead, this refers to the very old practice of washing eating utensils in tea, instead of soap and water. Some restaurants in countries outside of the United States still adhere to this practice, which is considered to be unhygienic in many other countries.
