Why You are at Risk for Illness at Home

We are constantly at risk for illness when we are out in the world, but few of us realize that we may be at greater risk in our own homes. You may keep a clean home, but you may not be giving special attention to important areas that can lead to illness.

These areas include door knobs, remote controls, telephone receivers, toilets, faucet handles, and surfaces where food touches. Other areas to pay special attention to include air conditioning vents and filters, and if you have little ones, you need to pay special attention to the floors in your home.

5 Common Illnesses to Guard Against at home

  1. Colds and Flu – Cold and flu germs spread fairly easy from one individual to the next. Keep things clean and disinfected, including door knobs, remotes, and telephone receivers. Change your air conditioning filters often.
  2. Viruses – Viruses are much like colds in that they spread quickly. While you should be disinfecting regularly to guard against colds, also disinfect the bathroom regularly to guard against viruses. Pay special attention to the toilet and faucet handles.
  3. Sinusitis – Sinusitis is not contagious. It is, however, a common problem. Change air conditioning vents regularly and dust your home regularly as well.
  4. Bronchitis – While there are many causes for bronchitis, and it is not contagious, it is a common problem. If anyone smokes, make them quit, or make them smoke outdoors away from you and your family.
  5. Staph Infections – If one person in your home gets staph, everyone is at risk. Staph spreads very easily and quickly. Seek medical treatment for the infected person, and follow your doctor’s directions for cleaning your home to guard against further infection.
