The Importance of a Team Building Day

Your team needs to learn to work well together, to depend on each other, and to back each other up. This can be accomplished through a variety of games, exercises, activities, and fun.

A team building day should not feel like work. It should not feel like a meeting either. Instead, it should feel like a fun and enjoyable event. It should also be used for team members to learn more about each other, and to figure out what they may be doing right, in regards to being a part of the team, and what they may be doing wrong.

10 Ways to Strengthen Your Team

  1. Recognize team members who have really shined during the project up to this point. Also consider awards for expectations – such as ‘most likely to have a nervous breakdown’ or ‘most likely to laugh at an inappropriate time.’ It can be serious, but it can be fun as well.
  2. Involve team members in planning the event. If you cannot hire a professional event planner, assign event tasks to each team member. This enables them to see how a small task becomes part of a much larger picture.
  3. Provide Prizes. Have drawings, and provide prizes to winners of games and activities as well.
  4. Play games that give members the chance to get to know each other on a personal level. You can divide into teams, and then ask questions about personal lives for points. The questions, of course, shouldn’t be uncomfortably personal.
  5. Have questions and forms. This should not resemble work. Instead it should be informative and fun at the same time. Consider forms for each member to fill out anonymously, and ask questions that they can easily answer because it is anonymous.
  6. Provide entertainment and food. Believe it or not, food is more than a survival item; it is also a social item. Fun and simple food is best.
  7. Be prepared with team building games and exercises. There are numerous games and exercises that can be easily done. The games and activities should, of course, require team work.
  8. Get away from the office. While most events can be held at the office, everyone loves to get away for the day. Plant the event at another venue.
  9. Have a theme for the day. You should have a positive slogan for the day, and have this slogan printed on items that are used during your event. You could even have t-shirts made at a reasonable cost.
  10. Include Family Members. Your team’s family members are important to them. In fact, they are probably more important to them than the other members of the team. They need to be included in the activities.

Using Your Team Building Day in the Future

Your team building day may only last for a day, but the effects can last well into the future. Realize that your team will need to be re-motivated at some point – especially if the project is long. This means that you may want to schedule regular team building days in the future.
