10 Most Harmful Cosmetic Ingredients

  1. Imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea - are most commonly used preservatives after parabens (synthetic compounds included in almost all categories of cosmetics). American Academy of Dermatology has labeled them as the main reasons that cause dermatitis. These two substances are also known as: Germall II (diazolidinyl urea) and Germall 115 (imidazolidinyl urea). None of them has an antifungal effect and it is necessary to combine them with other preservatives. These chemicals are toxic to the body.
  2. Methyl / propyl / butyl / ethyl paraben – are the most used preservatives in the industry of cosmetics. They are used to inhibit bacterial growth and to extend the validity of the cosmetic product, thus they are toxic. Studies have shown that apart from skin irritation and allergic reactions, these parabens are found in tumor tissues of women facing breast cancer. Therefore, their absorption into the body and accumulation over time can cause cancer.
  3. Mineral oil and its derivatives - (Paraffin and other petrochemicals) are chemically processed synthetic oil. They usually can add up to 10% of cosmetic product and their prices are considerably low; they present a high stability and an easy integration into any formula.
  4. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – synthetic substance used in most shampoos, foam bath and soap. It causes irritation of eyes, skin, hair loss and allergic reactions.
  5. Propylene Glycol – is a standard feature for most herbal extracts. It is synthetic and has been linked repeatedly with a large number of allergies and toxic reactions.
  6. Talc - numerous scientific studies have found that frequent application of talcum powder in the genital area is associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer.
  7. Lanolin - emollient derived from sheep wool. It is used in the composition of lipsticks and creams and can cause severe forms of acne. Usually, lanolin used in cosmetics is contaminated with pesticides and insecticides.
  8. Stearalkonium Chloride - chemical used as an ingredient in hair conditioner and various creams. It is toxic and causes allergic reactions. The adds say that it has moisturizing properties and it is much cheaper and easier to use in hair conditioners composition than proteins and plant extracts (which really benefit the health of your hair).
  9. Synthetic perfumes - may have more than 200 ingredients in their composition. Of course there is no way to know which ones they are, since on the label it will simply say “Perfume / Fragrance.” Some of the problems caused by these chemicals are headaches, dizziness, skin irritation, hyperpigmentation, violent coughing, vomiting.
  10. Synthetic dyes – are used to “beautify” the appearance of the composition. Should be avoided at all costs. We can recognize them because they are printed on the label as FD$C or D$C followed by a color and a number. For example: FD$C Red No. 6 / D$C Green No. 6. These synthetic dyes are considered carcinogenic.

In conclusion, you should only look for products that contain mostly natural ingredients. Do not use cosmetics that are artificially colored. Is your shampoo is green, blue or pink? Does it contain synthetic perfumes? Do not buy it and you will shortly notice that some of the allergic problems you have will start to fade out.
